There was a time when I believed that leadership meant perfection and is of a higher position. I thought that leadership was being the class president or the Secretary-General of Model United Nations. However, over time my understanding of leadership has evolved as I gained experiences and perspectives on different leadership styles and that leadership derives from relationships, not positions. Through my various experiences in university, I’ve learned that leaders can be inspirational, a role model, and very experienced, but they can also be an initiator, a supporter, and an advocator. An effective leader is dynamic and flexible in their approach. In some instances, active listening and support is needed to empower first year students in their transition to university, while in other instances, self-understanding and inclusion is needed to impact oneself and individuals in my local community. One of the most important ideas about leadership that resonated with me is that leaders should lead through setting good examples and empower others to support their success.
I am a leader that supports, advocates, facilitates, and mentors others. I am a leader that proactively seeks out opportunities to help others. I am a leader that focuses on progression not perfection.
I will be a leader that grows from mistakes I make and empower myself to succeed. I will be a leader that empowers others in their pursuit of success.
