My name is Sunny Ko (she/her). ☀️
I am a graduating senior at the University of Washington majoring in Economics (BA), Law, Societies and Justice, and Sociology. I was born in Taiwan and grew up mostly in Texas.
I am a sister, middle child, only daughter, and international student; my identities shape my approach to what I do, whether it is to stand out from my older sibling's shadow or to be a role model for my younger sibling. My personal identities and values determine how I approach my goals and shape my driving factors and motivation. The personal identities I tie myself to, such as within my family, my circle of friends, physical attributes, at work, and in my education changes and motivates the way I interact with other people, the importance of things in my life, and my priorities.
My three years at the university were filled with an immense amount of knowledge, amazing opportunities, and personal growth.
My support system ❤️
Optimism is a positive attitude, mindset, and outlook on life.
Optimism is an important core value to me because I want to be able to always focus on the positive and hopeful aspects of life and to maintain resilience in everyday life. And like my name, Sunny, I want to present myself in a happy and bright way; this not only affects me personally on a daily basis but also those around me. I think having an optimistic demeanor is important in appreciating life even with all the ups and downs we experience.
Happiness is an emotional state of feeling joyful.
It is important to have happiness and to value happiness in life because I think we only get one chance at life and we should always prioritize our happiness when in the face of life. I think happiness embodies love, health, family and more; and to value happiness means that I am enjoying life and all the positivity offered in various aspects including life experiences such as romantic relationships, friendships, family relationships, mental health, and more. Happiness can stem internally and externally, and the importance of happiness as a core value is that I want to find happiness in the external factors such as traveling or through a sense of purpose, and I want to find happiness internally through my mindset and a positive perspective on life.
Achievement is an accomplishment of a goal and milestone in life.
The importance of achievement to my core value is that I am someone who is determined and motivated, and I have many goals in life that I want to achieve. Compared to accomplishment, I chose achievement as a core value because I think achievement reflects huge milestones such as getting a bachelor's degree, while I think accomplishments are the little tasks or jobs such as writing an article for a school newspaper or gaining a leadership position.
Compassion is a deep feeling of concern, care, empathy, and connection with other people.
Compassion is my core value because I think it is important that everyone holds a certain degree of compassion for other human beings since we all come from a different background and no one knows the kind of demons we are each fighting internally. Thus, I think having compassion is important in connecting with others and demonstrates kindness, understanding, and genuinity in someone else’s life. When I am not feeling my best, I hope those around me are compassionate about my situation and are supportive and caring of me, and I also hope to be a compassionate person that offers support and help to people without judgment.
Organization, in terms of goals and personal characteristics, is having a clear objective and decisiveness in my goals, and embodying the personal trait of an organized individual with my habits.
The importance of organization as my core value is that I like to have order in life. Through organization, I aim to stay on top of my tasks and assignments. And with organizational skills, I aim to keep my study space and living space organized. I find that a disorganized environment makes me more anxious and less able to concentrate, thus the importance of organization in my life is not only the mental aspects but also the physical components.
As a people person, my goal is to make the life of those around me a little more ‘sunny.’ As a fellow college student and an international, I understand the difficulty in navigating a big campus, being independent, and living away from my support system. Therefore, as a student community supporter, I am interested in supporting residents as they make the dorms their home away from home.
As someone who is interested in going to law school and is invested in understanding the criminal justice system, my learning and knowledge on mass incarceration, the injustices of the system, and sentencing reforms drives my motivation to advocate for social justices. I am supportive of second chances and believe in the goodness in others. Through advocating for others, I believe in positively impacting their lives and connection to others in their community.
As someone who strives to find opportunities and loves to maximize the utility of resources, I enjoyed my experience as a FIG student, which introduced me to campus resources and support systems (my two college best friends). Thus, I wanted to translate the support and experience I gain to future first-year college students and be a supporter in their college learning journey. As a student learning facilitator, my goal wasn’t just to give them the assignments for the class, but to be a support system and use my experience to help answer any questions they might have in planning their college journey.
I do what I do because I want to create achievements and positively affect others in my life. I like helping people and building relationships and connections, so I want my altruistic nature to change and better those around me, including myself. I am constantly motivated by my friends, colleagues, and people I meet in life. Through listening to their stories and understanding their experiences, I continuously grow and improve. I work hard to be the best version of myself so I can increase my knowledge, be more compassionate, and stay optimistic.
I envision myself engaging in leadership in the future in any career field I end up in because as I build my expertise, I want to be able to guide and support individuals and my community. I envision myself in the business world and/or the legal field, thus, my goal is to keep growing my knowledge and improving myself as I evolve and progress through future opportunities and experiences. I envision myself to continue supporting, advocating, facilitating, and mentoring others. I plan to be a leader that is proactive. I plan to be a leader that is focused on progression not perfection. I plan to be a leader that is optimistic, an achiever, organized, happy, and compassionate.
Goal: Making people's life a little more sunny ☀️
