About Us

The Surgery Interest Association (SIA) at the University of Washington is an RSO dedicated to expanding knowledge and opportunities for undergraduates interested in surgery. Our mission is to cultivate a vibrant community that connects students with like-minded peers and surgical professionals, inspiring the next generation of healthcare leaders. We strive to foster these connections and provide resources that empower students to pursue a career in surgery. We are open to pre-nurse, pre-PA, pre-medical and all other UW Seattle and UW Bothell students!

How did SIA start?

The Surgery Interest Association was founded in 2023 by a group of undergraduate students at the University of Washington who saw a gap between established surgical professionals and undergrads. As surgery is a very competitive field without many readily available opportunities to learn about the specialty, they found a way to educate fellow undergrads through guest speakers, informational sessions, suture clinics, walkthroughs of surgical procedures, and more.

Purpose

To be a hands-on pre-surgery organization where students can learn through visual and tactile senses.
To educate highly motivated surgery-interested students about surgery and closely related careers.
To connect UW undergraduate students with surgical professionals and resources.
To get creative and introduce students to historical and current suture techniques.
