Principal Investigator & Lab Director
Dr. Foster is an assistant professor of Child Clinical Psychology and Global Health at the University of Washington, and the principal investigator of the Person-Centered Etiology and Assessment Research Lab (PEARL). Her work uses a developmental psychopathology approach to understanding variation in psychopathology and addictive behavior across individuals and time.
Post-Doctoral Researcher
Marilyn (B.A., Washington University in St. Louis; M.A., Temple University; Ph.D., Washington University in St. Louis) is a postdoctoral researcher at PEARL. Her research focuses on stress-based disorders and phenomena, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and suicidality. She uses experiential sampling and person-centered statistical methods to model group and individual-level psychological processes and is particularly interested in examining how these methods could be integrated with digital technology to improve access to psychological treatments.

Katie is a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. student interested in leveraging person-centered methods to understand developmental psychopathology, emotion regulation and the ways in which one’s context and mindset impact symptom manifestation.

Laila is a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. student interested in applying a dynamic and individualized approach to her research on adolescent mental health and substance use.
Orientation Coordinator
Eva graduated from UW in 2021 after completing an honors theses on the relationships between acceptance, anxiety, and chronic pain with Dr. Foster. She is currently working as an Operations and Research Associate at the Portland DBT Institute where her research interests include interventions for depression, anxiety, and chronic pain.
Betty graduated from UW in 2021 after completing an honors thesis on person-specific links between sleep disturbance, sleep hygiene practice, and depression symptoms with Dr. Foster. She is currently completing a Master's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at NYU, where her research interests include depression and sleep.
Abigail managed the PEARL project from 2020-2023, helping to develop and coordinate both PEARL and PEARLY projects. She left the lab to complete a Master's degree in Clinical Social Work and hopes to put her research interests in adolescent mental health and self-harming behaviors into use someday through a private therapy practice.
