Funding
PEARL lab is grateful to have received funding from university and national agencies. Below is a description of active funding for lab projects:
June, 2022 Drs. Foster and Piccirillo were awarded a Small Grants Award from the Addictions, Drug, and Alcohol Institute. This award provides research funding for PEARL project efforts.
June 2022 Katie Spink was awarded the Scholarship for Developmental, Child, and Family Psychology to attend the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods for Social Research hosted by the University of Michigan.
May, 2022 Dr. Piccirillo was awarded a K99 Pathway to Independence Award from NIAAA. This award provides 2 years of continued training in alcohol research and new opportunities for training in passive sensing data collection methods and clinical trials.
April, 2022 Laila Volpe was awarded the UW Department of Psychology Travel Award to go to the 45th annual meeting for the Research Society on Alcoholism.

Dora, J., Piccirillo, M.L., Foster, K.T., Arbeau, K., Armeli, S., Auriacombe, M., Bartholow. B., Beltz, A.M., Blumenstock, S., Bold, K., Bonar, E., Braitman, A., Carpenter, R., Creswell, K., DeHart, T., Dvorak, R., Emery, N., Enkema, M.E., Fairbairn, C., …, King, K. M. (2021). The daily association between affect and alcohol use: A meta-analysis of individual participant data. https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/xevct
This preprint is an individual participant meta-analysis examining the daily associations between affect and alcohol use using data collected from nearly 70 research teams. On the daily level, evidence suggests that positive affect and alcohol were positively associated; however, contrary to pre-registered hypotheses, there was no significant association between negative affect and alcohol use.
Foster, K.T., Piccirillo, M.L., Hicks, B.M., Iacono, W.G., & McGue, M. (2021). The trajectory of psychiatric problems following an adolescent vs. young adult onset of alcohol use disorder. https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/eq2vd
This preprint presents results from prospective analysis testing how psychiatric problems unfold for men and women with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and examining the role of gender and age of AUD onset on psychiatric problems. Results demonstrate that an AUD onset during adolescence predicted more severe psychiatric problems, particularly for men; however, women reported more pervasive psychiatric problems overall, regardless of age of AUD onset.
Piccirillo, M.L., Frumkin, M.R., Tonge, N.A., & Foster, K.T. (2021). Examining the clinical utility of using affective dynamics to characterize and predict depression within a comorbid sample. https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/uj5xd
This preprint examines the within-day changes between depressed mood and anxiety. We demonstrate how daily fluctuations in depressed mood and anxiety are linked to concurrent and future markers of clinical severity.
Piccirillo, M.L., Enkema, M.C., Foster, K.T. (2022). Using the experience sampling method to support clinical practice: An illustration with problematic cannabis use. https://psyarxiv.com/jxmk7
In this preprint, we illustrate how factors associated with cannabis use differ on the daily level for each individual. We examine how results from experience sampling data can be used to generate clinical inferences and inform actionable clinical strategies
