Teaching Philosophy
My philosophy of teaching is based in the belief that learning is an active process facilitated by experience, discussion, reflection, and a strong sense of belonging. Success in learning is not only the acquisition of new knowledge but also the ability to apply that knowledge to different scenarios and pass that knowledge on to others. Learning is an ongoing journey of exploration and discovery. It is not confined to the acquisition of facts but includes the development of critical and computational thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities.
Sense of Belonging
Central to my teaching approach is facilitating a sense of belonging in the classroom. I have had an especially difficult time learning in environments that felt unsafe. Early in my education, I experienced a lot of prejudice from my peers inside and outside the classroom; not only did that hurt my feelings it led to cognitive overload. Education for students can feel less important when the classroom feels unsafe and every day is a fight for survival. From those experiences I have built this cornerstone of making every student feel welcome and a sense of belonging.
Self-Efficacy
Additionally, I am dedicated to fostering self-efficacy in my students, understanding that empowering them to take charge of their education is pivotal for academic achievement; research shows that when students believe in their ability to succeed, they are more likely to persist through challenges and achieve their goals. I accomplish this by designing group projects that encourage thorough exploration and deep engagement with self-selected topics. By allowing them to take ownership of their learning and pursue their interests, I aim to cultivate a sense of autonomy and confidence in their abilities. Discovering personal interests within each course's focus is integral to the learning process.
Life Beyond the Classroom
As an educator at the tertiary level empowering students with essential knowledge, skills, and self-assurance required to excel in their futures. While many students pursue education with the aim of securing better employment, a smaller percentage embark on an academic trajectory. I aim to facilitate critical thinking, computational thinking, creativity, and a deep-seated passion for lifelong learning are equally, if not more, vital. These skills not only enable students to navigate complex challenges in their respective fields but also foster adaptability and innovation in an ever-evolving professional landscape. Ultimately, my goal extends beyond academic success and encompasses preparing students for personal and professional growth.
Approaches to Instruction
I employ a range of teaching strategies to address the diverse learning needs of students. My computational methods course includes conceptual and method lectures to establish foundational knowledge, quizzes, 1 case study presentation per student, and a final small group project. By providing opportunities for hands-on experience and real-world problem-solving, I aim to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application by fostering deeper comprehension and preparing students for success in their chosen fields. Assessment in my classes varies depending on class size. In larger classes, I use weekly quizzes to gauge understanding and identify areas that may require additional attention. In smaller classes, assessments take the form of written responses that allow students to demonstrate their comprehension and ability to apply concepts in new contexts.
In summary, my teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in creating an active and inclusive learning environment where students feel valued, empowered, and equipped with the necessary skills for success both inside and outside the classroom. By prioritizing a sense of belonging, fostering self-efficacy, and lifelong learning, I strive to prepare students not only for academic achievement but also for personal and professional growth in an ever-changing world.
