DRiP (Directed Reading in Physics) pairs undergraduate students with dedicated graduate students, or research guides (RGs), with the purpose of developing abilities to critically engage with advanced academic literature and to clearly communicate scientific material. These skill sets are essential for future research endeavors. Students work with their RGs to explore their chosen research area in detail, facilitating a connection to the research environment within the UW physics department.
The DRiP program aims to foster an environment in which students become their own intellectual leaders in physics research. While conventional coursework usually consists of finite assignments, research is not always so clearly constrained and can extend indefinitely. DRiP students are encouraged to begin, or continue, this transition into defining and leading their own research trajectories.
DRiP promotes accessibility to physics research for all undergraduates, particularly those from underrepresented groups. Students who have little research experience, and those who have not participated in the program before, are prioritized. The program aims to provide an entry point, with guidance from the RGs, for students who want to pursue physics research.
