With the advancement in learning analytics (LA), we have seen a number of LA feedback solutions for personalising feedback at scale. Now, since the meteoric rise of generative AI technologies, there has been a subsequent increase in LA research to further augment LA feedback. The rapid adoption of GenAI in feedback processes creates a unique opportunity to rethink and extend established concepts of feedback. To ensure that new tools and approaches enhance rather than dilute effective practice, it is vital to ground these developments in robust theory and evidence.
This workshop is the fourth in a series of workshops delivered at LAK which explored opportunities and challenges around LA tools, as well as the perspectives of personalised feedback from different stakeholders. In this fourth instalment, we look back and reflect on the progress and key issues from the work on personalised LA feedback over the past few years, as well as look forward to the future of LA feedback enhanced with emerging technologies.

This 3-hour, interactive workshop brings together scholars and practitioners to explore examples of how educators and system developers can co-design learning analytics feedback processes. The workshop has three primary goals:
Reflect on the current adequacy of our multidisciplinary conceptual foundations for practitioners and researchers in LA for effective learning analytics feedback practices in HE;
Share approaches for scaling personalised feedback with particular attention to how data are used to inform personalisation, as well as the processes for personalised, dialogic feedback (e.g., timing, content, modality);
Promote reflection on both pedagogical and technological approaches to improve feedback practices targeted at the improvement of student learning and their ability to self-regulate learning.
This workshop is structured to facilitate deep engagement with current issues in personalised LA feedback through a combination of discussions, presentations on the cutting edge of research and development in this area, and knowledge synthesis.
Opening Session (20 mins)
Our expert panel will provide an overview of the current state of personalised LA feedback, drawing on the work over the last few years, and highlighting important issues as well as emerging research directions that will frame our discussions throughout the workshop.
Iterative Discussion Cycles (90 mins total)
The core of the workshop consists of three structured cycles, each designed to build progressively on insights from the previous round:
Focused Group Discussions (10-15 mins) – Participants will work in small groups to explore specific aspects of LA feedback design, implementation, or evaluation. These discussions will draw on your own research and practical experiences.
Lightning talks (10 mins) – Brief presentations from researchers and practitioners will introduce current work, novel approaches, and empirical findings relevant to the discussion topic. The benefit of these lightning talks is to gather ideas from each other, as well as to raise awareness of any challenges relating to the work in this area.
Comparative Synthesis (10 mins) – Groups will reconvene to share key insights and compare their initial perspectives with the ideas presented. This iterative process allows for refinement of concepts and identification of convergent themes.
Collective Roadmapping (20 mins)
The workshop will conclude with a collaborative session to identify priority areas and promising directions for advancing research on personalised LA feedback. Participants will leave with both theoretical insights and practical perspectives informed by the collective expertise in the room.
