Our methods in conducting the
Online Design Studios in 2020/2021.
UTM and the Programme of Architecture have chosen specific applications and procedures to effectively deliver online teaching and learning, upon convenient of students and faculty members.
Face-to-Face and Online Design studios
Semester 1 and 2 were conducted in different ways by practicing both online and face-to-face teaching and learning. Semester 1 was conducted online while Semester 2 was to be completely face-to-face (with the exception of 2nd year students) until the government enacted the Movement Control Order (MCO).
Online Assessment
Methods
Our programme opted for a hybrid of synchronous and asynchronous assessment methods to address the challenges students faced during online learning.
Method 1 (Synchronous): Applied in the 1st year studio for students' to experience live presentation to panels. Students engage and receive feedback from the panels within a live session.
Method 2 (Asynchronous & Synchronous): Applied in other years, in which students submitted their project boards and pre-recorded video presentation earlier to allow panels to review the submissions online before the final assessment.
Online applications adopted for online T&L
UTM E-Learning
The online learning platform provided by UTM was launched prior to the pandemic and has since been used within the design studios to collate course information, design references, submissions and asynchronous feedback notes.
Google Suites
The Google education account provided by UTM allows students to use Google services such as Google Drive (file storage and sharing) and Google Slides (presentations and collaborative work) for crits and reviews. The tool allows real-time and offline feedback from Workbase masters. In addition, Google Forms is often used as a submission platform, while Google Sheet is used for marking and written feedback.
Padlet
Information shared in the design studio was organised in Padlet. Project briefs, recorded videos, images, and documents are organised with multiple layout options and social media-like features. Comments and feedback occur in posted collaboration notes.
Miro
The Programme of Architecture has introduced the Miro app to students beginning in the 2nd semester of 2019/2020 at the start of the pandemic. Miro is an online whiteboarding tool that allows students to collaborate with their peers, record their design process, receive real-time feedback from workbase masters or examiners and be used for project presentations. Our programme also adopted Miro for student organised portfolio exhibitions.
