How to use this module: During this module, prospective teachers will examine resources available in families and communities, reflecting on one's own perceptions of learning assets and why we may not inherently recognize or acknowledge community strengths. Participants will also become aware of barriers that families face in accessing resources, and strategies for helping families to connect with local organizations and with each other in order for everyone to work together to support and value children and their learning in the classroom and at home. By creating accessible conversations around development and academic progress, future teachers will increase their comfort in partnering with families in order to create a continuum of care for children and draw upon community strengths to ease the burden on classroom educators.
Module 3, Connect and Collaborate with Communities, is designed to guide educators to develop core competencies to foster parental, family, and community engagement in schools. Part 1 guides participants to engage in readings and activities that support fostering community partnerships for learning & family wellbeing by exploring community assets, and working to connect families with resources and support networks. Part 2 focuses on developing accessible systems and communication that integrate families and communities more closely to the educational process and learning that is happening in the classroom.
