Mastery Learning for TBSN Students
Mastery learning is a teaching strategy used to build competencies and skills based on predetermined standards. This approach allows for feedback and individual practice based on well-defined evidenced-based standards. The College of Nursing identified skills that were critical for student success; however, these skills do not encompass all nursing skills available.
Students are responsible for all content covered in labs and simulations. Students are required to successfully complete the Mastery Learning skills assigned to each course to progress in the class. These skills are listed below.
Mastery Skills
Clinical Immersion I
PPE donning and doffing
Sterile Gloving
Patient Transfer
Health Assessment
Head to Toe Physical Examination
Clinical Immersion II
Foley Catheter Insertion
Subcutaneous medication administration
Intramuscular injection
IV start
Clinical Immersion IV
Trach suctioning
IV push medication
Central Venous Access Device Dressing change
Clinical Immersion VI
Students will demonstrate mastery of skills through a final check-off process.
Expectations
Students will receive Mastery Learning Skill rubrics per coordinators for each course. Each student will have time to learn and practice skills throughout the semester in labs/simulations and on their own.
Mastery Learning Testing Procedure
Mastery Learning Skills will be deemed unsuccessful based on the pre-designated rubric for each skill. Each rubric includes a passing score and critical steps the student must complete to pass the defined skill successfully.
1st attempt
The student successfully performs the assigned skill per the rubric with a passing score and includes all of the critical steps to pass the course successfully.
A student who is unsuccessful with the first attempt will receive remediation with the clinical faculty or the course coordinator. Faculty may use the score from the first attempt for the grade book for the course.
2nd attempt
The student successfully performs the assigned skill per the rubric with a passing score and includes all of the critical steps to pass the course successfully.
A student who is unsuccessful on the second attempt will receive a SPIF and remediation with clinical faculty or the course coordinator. The third attempt may not occur earlier than 24 hours after the second attempt.
3rd attempt
The student successfully performs the assigned skill per the rubric with a passing score and includes all of the critical steps to pass the course successfully.o A student
