This section of our website resource is focused on providing tools, activities, and lessons in which to engage students in the components of reading, writing, and speaking science. While our research has focused heavily on the three major components of scientific literacy and research-based literacy strategies, we also believe it is critical to align our website resource to meet the needs of diverse student populations. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Research Council (NRC) emphasize a commitment to "science for all" that is highly significant for diverse learners.
In particular, the commitment to science for all implies inclusion not only of those who traditionally have received encouragement and opportunity to pursue science, but of women and girls, all racial and ethnic groups, students with disabilities, and those with limited proficiency in English. (NRC, 1993, p.1)
Currently, our team is working on aligning each strategy with supports for specific student populations.
As with the art of teaching, we view this section of our website as continually under construction. We seek to add more tools, and improve and modify the current tools.
We value rich collaboration with other experts in the field. We encourage users of our website resource to contact us with ideas and ways to improve our current data base of scientific literacy tools.
