The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Adolescent Medicine Fellowship provides a minimum of 18 months of “research” rotations throughout the three-year fellowship. The fellow is expected to identify, participate in, and complete a scholarly activity as described by the American Board of Pediatrics. Coursework counts toward this research time.
The ABP has expanded project options but has not diluted the rigor expected. Scholarly activity can include, but is not limited to, clinical research, basic science research, meta-analysis, Cochrane review, Quality improvement project, educational curriculum design, and Master’s level program with a thesis.
The Divisional Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) provides oversight of all scholarly activity.
There are various educational conferences for and provided to the fellows developed by the adolescent division, FAMLI national fellowship network, pediatric department, and McGovern. We prioritize fellow learning through providing formalized learning in various educational settings (i.e., didactic, tutorial, formal courses, workshops, simulation) to enrich the clinical experience and further develop the fellows’ skills in the six core competencies and scholarly requirements for fellowship training. Select conferences focus on providing fellows with the knowledge needed for the practice of adolescent medicine and board certification.
