Fun & Reflections: Insights and Experiences from Current Fellows

Diana

What inspired you to pursue pediatric pulmonology?

I was inspired to pursue pediatric pulmonology by my passion for helping children with respiratory conditions lead healthier lives. During my training, I found myself drawn to the complexity and challenges of pediatric pulmonology, as well as the privilege of providing care to patients across various settings. The opportunity to care for newborns in the NICU and follow up with them as they grow has been particularly rewarding. Additionally, I was drawn to the procedural aspects of pediatric pulmonology, such as flexible bronchoscopy and pulmonary function testing, which allow for both diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, I have found working with complex patients on ventilators or noninvasive ventilation to be incredibly rewarding, as it provides an opportunity to utilize my skills and knowledge to improve their quality of life and long-term outcomes.

What are your favorite things about the program?

I love the variety of complexity in patients that the program offers. The support from the attendings in helping us reach our full potential is invaluable. They are approachable and incredibly knowledgeable, making every day at work an enjoyable learning experience. A fun fact is that I did an observership at this program before residency, so I knew I wanted to come back!

What's your favorite thing to do in Houston during your free time?

I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two dogs, as well as going out with friends. I love Mexican food, so I particularly enjoy brunch at a restaurant called Cuchara. There is always something fun happening in Houston!

Gretchen

Why are you passionate about Pedi Pulm?

I love the NICU babies and seeing them grow and outgrow the challenges they faced so early in their lives. I also love the clinic and the personal relationships you can build with the families while improving the quality of life of the little ones.

What are your favorite things about the program?

The people, without a doubt! How they make you feel like part of the team from the beginning. How much they care about teaching and the well-being of the fellows is impressive. You feel valued and learn a lot in a very safe space.

Can you highlight any ongoing research projects or areas of interest in your pediatric pulmonary work?

I am currently working with Dr. Yadav analyzing asthma symptoms on sickle cell patients and their results on PFTs. I'm also working on my ATS oral presentation this year about pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with PCD.

Daniel
