"Our fellowship culture is one of clinical, academic, research and professional excellence, all while maintaining a sense of humor and compassion in a family environment. I chose UTHealth Houston for several reasons; High acuity (achieved by an intermediate unit run by hospitalists), a mixed unit (Pediatric Intensive Care and Cardiac Intensive Care in one unit), involvement with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (a three-star Congenital Heart Surgery Program), and diversity of training and clinical interests of faculty. There are fourteen attendings, many of whom trained or were attendings at different institutions with additional experience in cardiac critical care, neurocritical care, and ultrasound etc. We are one of the busiest trauma and air transport institutions in the country with excellent research opportunities and excellent post graduate opportunities." -Jonathan Runyon

"We have a very busy unit with high acuity. We also have a unit that has grown three-times it's size in the last two years in terms of it's cardiac program. That being said, we have had to spread ourselves thin at times, but have had a wealth of clinical experience. We have since recruited more fellows and our schedules are now much more evenly distributed with bedside as well as didactic learning and research time. Our unit can be stressful and we have each others backs. The seniors look out for the juniors and our attendings make certain that we attend our didactics and also make sure to teach all fellows during rounds each day. We also hang out a lot together and are pretty much a big family." -John Leotaud

"The fellowship culture is friendly. Everyone gets along and we all work well together. Both fellows and attending physicians are willing to stay late and help out if things get tough. Fellows are always willing to be flexible and ready to help one another by making rotation swaps if life circumstances require it." -Ernesto Fernandez

"I would describe our culture as strongly education-focused while also being friendly and supportive. The unit is very busy and the patient acuity is high, but despite the stressful environment everyone has a very positive attitude, wants to teach, and manages to have a good sense of humor and fun! I chose this program because of the strong clinical training I would get in both general and cardiac ICU, the focus on education, and the warm, friendly feeling that I got during my interview. I also got the sense that the program was growing in a lot of big ways and I was excited by the opportunity to be a part of that. So far, my favorite part of the fellowship has been my co-fellows, they are fun, smart, and I love working with them!" -Amanda McCarthy

"The attendings are great teachers and really encourage you to learn in a hands-on way, which I love. The fellows are all supportive of one another; it's a great team! I wanted to train in a high volume PICU with a strong cardiac program. UTH has a great balance of both cardiac and general PICU." -Janie Pierce

"Culture feels like a great education/service balance, where we try to learn a bunch, but have fun while doing it." -Aiyasawmy Dave Dorairajan

"The culture here is supportive/friendly both from a "fellow to fellow' and 'attending to fellow' stand point." -Jefferson Bedell

"After working in our ICU as a resident and getting to know the staff and faculty, choosing UT for fellowship was an easy decision. One of the attributes I looked for in a program was exposure to as many different patient presentations and disorders as possible in order to help me become the best intensivist possible. With our program being located within the busiest medical center in the US, I feel that I couldn't have made a better choice to accomplish my goals. It's exciting to witness the rapid growth and expansion of our facility alongside a closely knit ICU family of faculty and fellows, and I'm looking forward to what the future for our program will bring." -Dillon Burks

"High volume and high acuity unit in a big medical center with limitless opportunities. Wide exposure to a diverse patient population in a major city. Collegial and learning focused environment with supportive attendings and co-fellows" -Ahmed Mafraj
