Wilmot Proviso

After acquiring land from the Mexican Cession, the big question became, "Will slavery be allowed in this new territory?" The Wilmot Proviso proposed to ban slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico (Mexican Cession) in the U.S.-Mexican War. Three times, this law tried to be passed but was rejected each time in the Senate, where the South had greater representation.
