Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1853. Although the novel was fictional it depicted the awful realities of slavery. Stowe's novel helped bring awareness to the evils of slavery and increased public support by the millions for the abolitionist cause.
It is reported that when Abraham Lincoln first met Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1862, soon after the start of the Civil War, Lincoln greeted her by saying, "so you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war."Â
