Background
COVID-19 hit the economy of Lorena hard. In speaking with our NGO, it was expressed that the community needed a new source for potential revenue. It was also expressed that the women of Lorena needed a space for gathering and for themselves as the soccer field primarily serves the men of the community. Our proposed solution was a community pavilion that could serve as a market during local soccer games and as a gathering space at other times. However, the local soccer field is located nearly 10 feet below the road, making access dangerous and difficult. The local community expressed a need for a safe access point from the road to the field, so we proposed implementing a wide ramp.

Impact
Our project intends to foster inclusion of the whole community in field activities, as it serves as the geographic center of Lorena. A ramp will support visiting soccer players and allow children from the bordering primary school to safely use the field for gym classes. The ramp and drainage improvements pave the way for a community pavilion. This pavilion would serve as a space for women to sell food during games and host educational events at other times.
Implementation
Improve Field Accessibility
In order to improve the success of the pavilion and also to allow children safer access to the field for recreation, we are going to begin by constructing a safe and earthquake-resistant concrete staircase from the road to the base of the field. This staircase will feature a handrail and will be wide enough to accommodate multiple people at a time and to allow for convenient access to the field for all members of the community.
Erosion Mitigation
Lorena suffers a long rainy season, making the soccer field unusable for periods of time. Previous PUC teams improved overall field drainage through the implementation of swales; however, the section of the field designated for the pavilion still suffers some severe flooding. To provide a stable location for the pavilion, we will be installing an erosion blanket and reseeding the area.
Future Improvements
Once Stages 1 & 2 have been completed, the groundwork will be complete for future improvements. The local municipality intends to donate a playset for the corner of the field. Other future projects might include field seating, field lighting, or a pavilion to provide a shaded space for women to sell goods during matches or for the community to gather for educational events at other times.
