Ryan Bailey and the Innovation group is featured on UDOT's Beyond the Barrels.
Ryan Bailey, UDOT’s Innovation and Implementation Coordinator, is tasked with facilitating innovation at UDOT, and he is very busy doing just that! By helping employees share their ideas & innovations he is encouraging an environment where innovation can thrive. If you haven’t stopped by the Learning Portal lately, you will be amazed at how many innovations have been shared, many of which are thanks to Ryan’s road trip to every maintenance shed in the state to talk with the boots on the ground getting work done. With an opportunity to show and tell about their ingenuity and creativity, each shed shared two to ten ideas! Ryan gathered over 150 ideas total while visiting the sheds
Now that Ryan has started the ball rolling in the maintenance world, he plans to make more trips and will set up meetings with other groups such as designers, and the Preconstruction and Construction/Inspection groups, and eventually every division and group within UDOT. If you have an idea that can’t wait until Ryan comes to you, share it in the Ideas tab of the Learning Portal at any time or email us at ideas@utah.gov. Keep those great ideas coming!

The Innovation Group will be hosting a “Float Your Ideas” event. The main event will be at Central in Salt Lake City as we throw our ideas out there written on paper airplanes literally thrown off the balconies at the target below. The goal here is to take a break from the day and try to get those creative juices flowing with a little fun.
Regions and field offices are encouraged to try it out as well.
As always, submit your own ideas to the Learning Portal!
Many of the maintenance stations have similar problems, but each came up with unique solutions. Collecting and sharing these ideas will help others adopt the innovations and save a little frustration and struggle in their own work.
The Innovation group is considering hosting a prototyping event to make best practice solutions for some of the Maintenance group’s biggest challenges.
