Gina Suarez-Malaguti is originally from Maracay, Venezuela. When she was 13 years old she migrated with her mom to the United States. At this point, tennis was already a big part of her life, having started at 6 years old. Leaving Venezuela was a tough decision that Gina’s mom had to make in order to provide a better life for her and use tennis as a platform for a better future. Gina maximized her mom’s sacrifices as much as she could by earning a full tennis scholarship at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. During her time at UNC, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Sport Medicine but also became an All-American, finished her college career ranked in the top 10 in the country and was ACC Player of the Year in 2013.
Gina fell in love with college athletics, the impact that the people around her made in her was life changing, so much that she wanted to pay it forward and make a commitment to make the world a better place through tennis. She decided to pursue a career in college coaching. Spring of 2014, Gina started at the University of Maryland as the women’s tennis assistant coach, before shifting to NC State for 3 years, she helped the Wolfpack reach the highest team ranking in school history at the time of 16th in the country. Gina is now starting her 7th season at the University of Virginia as the associate head coach. During her time at UVA, Gina has helped the team reach a ranking as high as 5th in the ITA National Rankings and the team has had a total of 12 All-Americans just in the past 3 seasons. At UVA, Gina has had the pleasure of coaching players such as Emma Navarro and Natasha Subhash. Gina helped Emma win the 2021 NCAA National Title, Natasha become a 4 time Time all American. Gina was three times the ITA Atlantic Regional Assistant coach of the year.
Above all, Gina’s main motivation is helping her student-athletes grow as people and enjoys building a culture of resilience and growth.
