Practicum Description: The purpose of this practicum experience is for the student to gain experience in understanding how to examine a specific student population’s needs while developing collaborative programming to meet those needs. The Cultural Centers has been working to better understand how to support Asian and Asian American students at USF in relation to trends around Asian and Asian American student support and engagement in higher education. The practicum student will deepen their understanding of Asian and Asian American student support in higher education through a review of scholarly research and evaluation of current USF programs, involvement in planning of current programs/events, and providing input into the continued development of a strategy to support Asian and Asian American students at USF.

Practicum Description: The Experiential Learning Initiatives Coordinator will help with two initiatives focused on creating equal access to experiential learning opportunities for all students. The first is providing funding for students who have accepted unpaid internships, to ensure all students regardless of financial status, have equal access to these opportunities. The second is helping to develop and deliver an internship course that will run concurrent with an unpaid internship that requires the student to receive academic credit in order to participate.
Learning Outcomes:
We will work together to customize the practicum to align learning outcomes with student interests. Some potential learning outcomes include curriculum development, internal and cross departmental collaboration, student application process development and management, and budgeting and coordination with financial aid, etc.

Practicum Title: Hazing Prevention Practicum

Practicum Description: UC Berkeley has recently started a Hazing Prevention Collaborative, housed with the Center for Support and Intervention. The Center for Support and Intervention (formerly Student Affairs Case Management) at UC Berkeley addresses prevention and intervention for harm and violence on campus, and provides support to students experiencing or causing distress in the campus community. Our Hazing Prevention practicum student will work closely with the Collaborative and CSI professional staff to write and design an online course related to hazing prevention. They will be tasked to gather best-practice training curricula from other campuses engaging with positive skill building to reduce hazing behaviors, and apply these to the Berkeley setting.

The Center for Support and Intervention has hosted multiple practicum students in the past, in both case management and violence prevention. We pride ourselves on creating an opportunity that involves a high amount of contact with a variety of campus departments, and with a specific final product that the student can use as an example of their work.
The Center for Support and Intervention can compensate HESA students to cover travel costs associated with commuting to UC Berkeley for the purposes of participating in this practicum experience. If the practicum is completed entirely virtually, the stipend will still be provided.

30%: Develop familiarity with an applied and integrated curriculum that differs from traditional degree programs that are organized disciplinary subjects and rote learning.

One of the first things the Chancellor has focused on is a community space for Chicanx Latinx undergraduate and graduate students. Students are in current negotiations with the Chancellor and we will know by end of semester if we will have a space for the Fall 2021or Spring 2022. Either way I will need a team of staff, fellows, interns and community partners to prepare for the grand opening of the new UCB Chicanx Latinx Student Community Resource Center.

Work plan: Calculating that there are 12/13 weeks and 7/8hours a week - here is how I would have the graduate fellow use their time
Week 1 & 2 - meeting with supervisor and get an understanding of the history, place, position and politics of the Chicanx Latinx Student Development. This would include reading reports and initiatives focused on becoming HSI.
Week 2 & 3 the graduate fellow will meet the staff and student office teams and all the various community spaces that focus on Chicanx Latinx community. Fellow will be integrated into the weekly and monthly meetings.
Week 4 & 5 graduate fellow will get their specific assignment in regards to the CL Resource Community Center - areas of focus can be protocols and policies for the center - emergency plans and site crises management; open/close and staff coverage; and the development of programming for the new center.
Week 6 & 7 - graduate fellow selects a specific project to work on and focuses on that until the end of the practicum.
Week 8 & 9 - working on project, attending staff meeting and also attend some student organizational and community meetings.
Week 10 &11 - graduate fellow continues to work on project and helps with the development of a manual of operations for the center.
Week 12 & 13 completes project and share with the CLSD team challenges and what they learned.
Scheduling Needs: As we are still in virtual reality much of the work can be virtual but don't know this as we will be going into hybrid model by the July. So, we can do 1/2 on line and maybe then in person.

DLS Summer Immersion Program Field Coordinator.
Students will work with faculty Jane Bleasdale) and staff ( Mauricia Diaz DeLeon) to coordinate one of the five site visits for the summer immersion program with DLS and ALAS. The immersion will include weekly visits to a farm in Half Moon Bay to connect with farmworker families and provide social and emotional support for children through reading, recreation food and fellowship.

The Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good was established in 2002 and has enrolled over 600+ students in its internships, course work and minor over its 20 years of existence. As part of the Center’s 20th anniversary and a culminating celebration in March 2022, the participant will play an integral role in creating an archive and data base of student success stories and documentation through online research in digital databases and social media platforms.
