Building Independence for Kindergarten
Putting on Jackets, Hats, and Gloves
Encourage children to practice dressing themselves, including putting on and taking off their own jackets, hats, and gloves.
Zipping and Buttoning
Help children practice zipping coats, backpacks, and buttoning pants or shirts.
Start with large buttons and zippers before moving to smaller ones.
Knowing How to Velcro or Tie Shoes
Teach children how to fasten their shoes, whether with Velcro straps or laces.
If learning to tie laces, practice with a shoe or a stuffed animal to build confidence.
Opening Containers and Putting Lids Back On
Encourage independence by having children practice opening snack bags, lunch containers, and juice boxes.
Show them how to reseal containers properly to prevent spills.
Washing Hands
Teach proper handwashing by using soap and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
Encourage washing before meals, after using the bathroom, and after coughing or sneezing.
Bathroom Independence
Ensure children can use the restroom independently, including wiping, flushing, washing hands, and adjusting clothing.
Encourage them to ask for help but practice independence as much as possible.
