Advanced Placement
AP Courses are rigorous, college-level courses in which students may earn college credit by scoring well on the end-of-course AP exam.
Not all classes are available for every grade and certain prerequisites may have to be met. See the HS course description book for more information about course requirements.
AP classes are free to take, but the AP exam costs around $100. Students are not required to take the end of year AP exam if they do not want to try for college credit.
Grades are weighted for GPA purposes. Each grade gets an extra .5 pts. So, an A = 4.5 points, B = 3.5, etc.

This is different for every student. It is best to talk with your counselor about what class or classes makes sense for you. It can be helpful to think about your SAT/ACT scores, as some schools offer credit for certain scores. Other things to consider are your future degree plans, looking at transfer credit for the institutions you might go to after graduation, and thinking about the other classes you are taking at the same time. If you plan to attend a Kansas public institution of higher education, use the Transfer Kansas portal to view how courses transfer across the state. You can also use this KBOR site to see what college math class is the best fit for you based on your intended major. If you plan to attend an out-of-state school or a private institution within the state of Kansas, it is your responsibility to contact the individual school to learn more about transfer options.
Important note about BIOL 100/102: BIOL 100/102 will be relevant and will serve as an appropriate general education requirement for most students, including pre-health majors such as pre-nursing, pre-physical therapy, etc. However, pre-med students and/or those wanting to pursue one of the undergraduate biological sciences degrees should, eventually, take the biological sciences major sequence of BIOL 150, 152, and 154, instead. The courses in this sequence are not currently offered as concurrent enrollment courses.

Dual Credit
Lawrence Free State High School students who wish to enroll in college-credit courses or high school-credit courses offered by colleges may request to have completed college coursework applied toward high school graduation requirements (dual credit). The following guidelines must be followed.
NOTE: High school student-athletes who need this credit, per KSHSAA requirements, must complete this form and inform their counselor immediately if they discontinue enrollment in the college course.
Students must submit a Dual Enrollment Application to their counselor prior to enrolling in or paying for any college or university course. A copy of the course description from the college catalog must be attached to the application.
Lawrence Free State High School credit will be approved only for courses taken from accredited colleges or universities (e.g., those accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools or an equivalent accrediting body).
In general, college credit applied toward high school graduation will be counted as elective credit. College courses may substitute for LFSHS graduation requirements only with prior approval of the Principal, in consultation with the appropriate department chair, to determine how well the course aligns with district outcomes.
Students must provide verification of enrollment to their counselor within one week of enrolling in the college course(s).
Tuition and all associated fees are the responsibility of the student.
Full-time enrollment is required for all students. A student may reduce their LFSHS course load by one class for each college or university course taken.
One college semester hour equals ½ high school credit at Free State High School. The Principal will determine credit awarded for courses taken on a quarter or trimester system.
It is the student’s responsibility to provide an official transcript of the completed college course to their counselor. The registrar will record the course as “out-of-district” on the student’s transcript. The unweighted grade (A, B, C, D, or F) will be included in the student’s overall GPA.
