“Back to the Drawing Board with Betty Edwards and Elizabeth Layton”
Location: Hiawatha Middle School Library Room 24
Presenter: Karen Cooper
Line is the basis of all art and learning to draw what we see is important for beginners and helps seasoned artists refresh with the basics. Exercises from Betty Edwards' book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is a great way to start any drawing practice. I teach contour line drawing to all of my students 1-12th grades at the beginning of each semester to help keep the skills strong. Participants will practice contour line and blind contour line drawing through a series of exercises culminating in a simple still life drawing. Some of the exercises feel silly and the results won't always be amazing (in fact they should be a little weird), but simply practicing them will bring a freshness to your drawing practice as you learn how to teach it to others. Kansas artist Elizabeth Layton became famous using only this method and her artwork is inspirational in its candor, humor and usefulness as a means to overcome mental health challenges. You'll definitely laugh, maybe even feel a little weird but you'll come away with a newfound love for the power of the Element of Line.
