PRIDE Programs
Providing Rice County Individual Developmental Experiences
The mission of the RCSSC PRIDE programs is to provide a nurturing environment committed to achieving excellence. All students are challenged to reach their maximum potential with instruction provided at an adapted level in order to provide a solid foundation of skills, knowledge and values. The foundation enables each student to become a well-educated, productive citizen who is able to cope with an ever-changing world.

Our PRIDE programs are designed for students that need intensive instruction to learn skills that are important for day to day living. In addition to the school setting, educational instruction will be delivered in naturally occuring community environments, providing students with "real life experiences." The goal is to provide the students with a variety of hands-on learning opportunities at all age levels to help them acquire the skills needed to live in the world today.
Functional Domains
The four primary areas addressed in the PRIDE programs are as follows
Daily Living
The students will participate in activities usually performed in the course of a normal day in a person's life.Vocational
The students will participate in activities designed to provide them with experiences in real work settings.Community
The students will participate in activities that provide them with instruction in appropriately accessing their local community, services and businesses.Recreation/Leisure
The students will participate in activities designed to teach them how to use their free time for the betterment of their mental and physical health.Instructional Goals
The sequence of instructional skills will be determined by the student's Individualized Educational Program (IEP). Reading, writing, language, math and science subjects are incorporated into functional activities. Reading and writing skills are taught to enable students to use functional materials such as cookbooks, directions, applications, maps, schedules, planners, environmental signs and work related information.
Community Goals
Community experiences offered to each student will vary based on his/her individual ability level and future needs. Students learn skills such as money handling, counting change, how to pay for goods and services, banking, budgeting, time concepts, time management, planning and scheduling.
Student transitions
As the student transitions from elementary to secondary level school, the time out in the community typically increases. Students learn to use adaptive aids such as checklists, cue cards, picture symbols and/or assistive technology to aid them in successfully accessing community activities and resources.
Graduation
Most students with disabilities have the opportunity to earn a regular high school diploma while some students may require an alternate graduation degree plan
Post-Secondary Opportunities
The PRIDE teacher will assist families in the process of determining eligibility for any available post school and/or adult service opportunties

The Mid Kansas Transition Council and RCSSC team up to hold the annual Job Olympics each fall. The competition is hosted at the Celebration Centre in Lyons, KS. Last year there were 12 different schools and over 90 students who participated in functional, daily living and employability skill events. What an incredible opportunity for our students.
