Health Note (From the School Nurse)

  • Pink Eye: Conjunctivitis- pain to the eye, redness, irritation, drainage, itchy, puffy eyes, sensitive to light. Very contagious. Must see a Doctor and may not return to school until 24 hours after treatment has been started.
  • Upper Respiratory Congestion: Runny nose, stuffed up nose, headache, sore throat, cough (dry or productive). Allow for adequate rest every night at least 8 to 12 hours for kids. Increase water intake. Can use a decongestant or a cold and allergy medicine. Watch for wheezing or shortness of breath- please take to Doctor if your child starts to have audible wheezing or complains of shortness of breath just sitting there. Encourage using elbow to cough or sneeze, good handwashing. If your child is struggling to kick this and is worn out please keep them home from school and all activities to allow them to rest.
  • Influenza: (Respiratory NOT stomach bug)- Fever, chills, body aches, runny nose, stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, chest discomfort, and tiredness. This is contagious and spreads easily. Please keep your child home until symptom free. Treat symptoms with over-the-counter medicine such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen and Cold and Flu medicine. Allow for adequate rest and drink plenty of water or gatorade to prevent from dehydration. If your child’s fever rises to 103 and or shows signs of dehydration (dry mouth, increased thirst, weakness, decrease in urine output) your child needs to be seen by a Doctor right away. If you or your child has not received a Flu shot, you still can get one. The Flu shot is to help build your immunity to be able to fight off influenza. The Flu shot has nothing to do with the stomach bug.
  • Stomach bug: Headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pains. Must stay home until free of symptoms 24-48 hours. Increase water intake. Allow stomach and intestines to rest by drinking clear liquids and then advancing to bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. Use good handwashing. This is contagious.
  • Strep throat: Fever, headache, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, nausea, vomiting. Need to go to Doctor right away. Must stay home for 24 hours after first treatment. Increase fluid intake and allow adequate rest. This is contagious.

Winter can become long with sicknesses. Please take care of yourself as well as your children. Have a great February! Love is an action, not a feeling. Love fearlessly!
