Advisory

What happens during Advisory?

During Advisory, students engage in a wide variety of academic, social emotional, career, and employability activities planned by our counseling department. These lessons are develop based on data collected from students throughout the school year. We also host all school-wide assemblies during this time on Fridays. This allows us to minimize the amount of bell schedule changes we have during the school year. Finally, students work on a variety of activities for their IPS and prepare for student-led conferences.

How is my student supported through Advisory if they are struggling academically?

We want students to not only perform well in the classroom, but we want them to master learning concepts set fourth by state standards or course competencies. If students have any grades less than 65%, we ask them to stay with their Advisory teacher for half of Cyclone HOur and intentionally use that time to focus on missing assignments. If students need to see a specific teacher during this time, they are given a pass or teachers communicate by calling/emailing each other.

Cyclone Hour ReFocus

During the first day of each week, students attend Advisory for our weekly ReFocus. During ReFocus, students complete a grade check form with their Advisory teacher and are asked to intentionally check their email for any important information sent from teachers, counselors, or administrators. This provides all students at Ottawa High school with a more intentional check-in each week and allows them to spend time intentionally determining how to best use their Cyclone Hour to support their own academic success for the week.
