The Guided Reading Workshop model combines direct instruction with hands-on and student-centered learning opportunities. Reading typically begins with a Strategy/Skill Lesson of the Day which reinforces our Strategies and Skills students can use throughout their learning and daily lives. We only spend about 20 minutes on this Focus Lesson discussing how students can use it in their Daily Reading and how it benefits students learning.
Next we break off into Small Groups to rotate through meaningful Reading Centers. One of the stations is the teacher table where your child will meet with me for small group, leveled guided Reading instruction. It is here that I will be able to teach concepts in ways that make sense to your child, assess understanding of reading concepts, model with Reading examples and ensure your child is experiencing reading ah - ha moments on a daily basis. It is truly amazing to see the growth that comes from consistent, targeted small group learning! Other stations will focus on Grammar Concepts, Weekly Vocabulary and Phonics Concepts. Students may work independently at some stations, or with a partner to help build collaborative learning skills.
After students have complete stations, we end our Reading Workshop with Writing. During the daily Writing Workshop students will be instructed on the specific topic/skill we are working on for that week, then they will be given time to work through the Writing Process at their own speed. This type of learning helps build independence and student accountability.
