These are scholarships that are internal to the university and/or the Department. Applications for scholarships from the Department of Political Science are typically open in February, and awardees are announced at the Political Science Banquet hosted each April.
USD students have been highly successful in winning competitive national scholarships. Melissa Berninger, Director of the Honors Program is the University liaison for these scholarships. Aside from these notable scholarships, there are many other external scholarship opportunities available to our students.
Farber Funds
The Farber Funds offer funding for POLS, CJUS, INTS, LEGL majors and civic leadership minors in the Dept. of Political Science for internships, conference travel, faculty-led programs, study abroad, fellowships, and more. Students must have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for the Funds.

The Farber Scholar program offers funding for students pursuing exceptional opportunities, including national and international level fellowships, internships, study abroad, and other educational opportunities.
Department of Political Science Scholarships
The Department of Political Science offers many scholarships, and we present them at our annual Awards Banquet in the spring. Department students are NOT automatically eligible but must apply through an application that opens early in the spring semester (deadline typically in February). Department students will receive a link to the application via email.
Farber Writing Awards
The Writing Awards are given to political science, criminal justice, and international studies majors for the best research papers submitted on issues related to the study of criminal justice, international studies, and/or political science. Papers must be at least 3,000 words long, include a literature review, and a formatted bibliography.
USD- Research Scholarships:
U.Discover – U.Discover summer research experience for undergraduate students is a 10-week summer research opportunity. Interested candidates can apply now through February 21. Applications can be found here.
CURCS Mini-Grants – Does your undergraduate student need funding for their research or travel expenses to present at a conference? They are welcome to apply for a CURCS Mini-Grant for up to $750! Opportunities are ongoing and can be applied for at this link.
