Phi Beta Kappa Lifto Amundson Lecture

Thursday, April 4, 5:00 p.m.; Farber Hall

The University of South Dakota's Phi Beta Kappa Alpha chapter welcomes Ingrid Daubechies, Ph.D., James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering, Duke University to present the Lifto Amundson Lecture.

The Lifto Amundson Lectureship has enabled distinguished speakers from the liberal arts disciplines to visit USD each year and share their research and perspectives with the community.  The Lifto Amundson Lecture, open to the general public, is given in conjunction with initiation ceremonies for new members of Phi Beta Kappa each spring.

Dr. Daubechies will be speaking on Mathematicians helping art historians and art conservators. In recent years, mathematical algorithms have helped art historians and art conservators putting together the thousands of fragments into which an unfortunate WWII bombing destroyed world famous frescos by Mantegna, decide that certain paintings by masters were “roll mates” (their canvases were cut from the same bolt), virtually remove artifacts in preparation for a restoration campaign, get more insight into paintings hidden underneath a visible one.
