Curriculum
This page consists of some pretty basic information regarding Taekwondo and how to start.

Belt Testing
The curriculum is designed such that you can attain 1st Dan after training for a standard 4-year period of college. Below is our belt system and the corresponding forms needed to pass to the next belt level.
Color Belts
White Belt: Join USC Taekwondo! Follow all instructions on the "Join Us" page; pay your dues, complete your paperwork! Taegeuk 1 Jang
Yellow Belt: Taegeuk 2 Jang, Taegeuk 3 Jang
Green Belt: Taegeuk 4 Jang, Taegeuk 5 Jang
Blue Belt: Taegeuk 6 Jang, Taegeuk 7 Jang
Brown Belt: Taegeuk 8 Jang
Red Belt: All Taegeuk Forms
Black Belts
1st dan (1 단): Black Belt: Koryo (고려)
2nd dan (2 단): Black Belt: Geumgang (금강)
Important Expressions
In class, we will use some Korean commands. Here are the more common ones we use here at USC Taekwondo, organized by importance (all pronunciations follow Revised Romanization, see here on how to pronounce Korean vowels and consonants):
Attention: cha-ryeot 차렷
Bow: gyeong-nye 경례 (敬禮)
Ready: jun-bi 준비 (準備)
Start: si-jak 시작 (始作)
Return to ready stance: baro 바로
At Ease/Rest: sui-eo 쉬어
Counting
In class, we often use native Korean numbers to count. Watch the provided video for proper pronunciation. For all practical purposes, you only need to know how to count from 1 to 10.
1: ha-na 하나
2: dul 둘
3: set 셋
4: net 넷
5: da-seot 다섯
6: yeo-seot 여섯
7: il-gop 일곱
8: yeo-deol 여덟
9: a-hop 아홉
10: yeol 열

Important Sparring Terminology:
Cheong 청 (青): blue
Hong 홍 (紅): red
Charyeot 차렷: attention
Gyeongnye 경례 (敬禮): bow
Junbi 준비 (準備): ready
Sijak 시작 (始作): start/begin
Kallyeo 갈려 (from imperative 해체 of 갈리다): break it up
Gamjeom 감점 (減點): penalty (lit. "point deduction")
Gyesok 계속 (繼續): continue
Sigan 시간 (時間): time is up (lit. "time")
Cheong seung 청승 (青勝): blue wins
Hong seung 홍승 (紅勝): red wins
