I aim for all of my students, regardless of their backgrounds and prior experiences, to feel empowered to pursue their educational goals and career paths by fostering inclusive environments in the classroom. My own educational journey and experiences as a teacher have shown me that building such classroom environments requires being attentive to the diversity of students’ educational and personal backgrounds and actively fostering a community among students and teachers. I hope to show that all students belong in a STEM class and play a part in encouraging their future accomplishments.
My objectives as a teacher are:
To equip students with the mathematical tools needed to think critically about problems and generate their own creative solutions, regardless of previous educational experience.
To show students that there are diverse real-world applications that can be solved with data, models, and algorithms to have a positive impact on society.
To instill confidence in students to be leaders in their future careers, equipped with the ability to communicate their ideas effectively and collaborate with others.
A few students surprised me with chalkboard art before discussion!

My students wanted to take a picture of our crowded office hours! I would do my best to fit everyone, even if it meant adjusting on the spot.
In the Fall 2024 semester, I had the privilege of being the head teaching assistant for CSCI 270 (Introduction to Algorithms and Theory of Computing) at USC for a class of 230 undergraduate students, with 115 of them being in my discussion section. Through an anonymous end-of-year evaluation, students offered thoughtful and positive feedback, with all 31 respondents rating my overall performance as a TA at 5/5. I have compiled some student quotes from this end-of-year survey below, where students highlighted my teaching abilities and my ability to create inclusive classroom environments.
"Amazing. best TA. I would not pass 270 without his guidance he explains topics with clarity and depth and is very patient with the students you never walk away confused."
"Nathan makes one of the hardest CS classes at USC actually understandable. Nathan teaches with care, intelligence, and understanding."
"Nathan was like another professor for this course -- I would sometimes forget that he was a Teaching Assistant."
"NATHAN IS AMAZING. He is excellent at simplifying complex concepts that I couldn’t even understand in lectures. He goes the extra mile to make sure we understand every little detail. This subject is not my forte AT ALL, but Nathan is the sole reason I am consistently doing well in class and scoring above average - this undoubtedly would not have been possible without Nathan. Nathan’s OH is basically my substitute for lectures, and I really wish he could be a lecturer for this class."
"Nathan is an incredible teacher with numerous strengths. His ability to clearly explain and deliver complex problems is unmatched. He starts from the basics, ensuring every student understands the material, and is both patient and engaging while solving questions."
"Nathan’s teaching style is remarkable; he scans the room after every explanation to check for confusion, addressing each student’s challenges with clarity and care. He tailors his approach, often offering alternative explanations and visual aids like diagrams to make concepts easier to grasp."
"Asks great questions and is able to tailor his answers and teachings to the specific needs of and understandings of the student. He is very patient and always looks for the a new insight and new way to teach and explain. He is able to keep going until I understand the concept."
"Wherever Nathan goes to lecture and take on professor responsibilities is incredibly lucky to have him -- they will not be disappointed, not by his commitment, his fantastic technical skills, his knowledge for the subject and the ability to bring in real-life examples to it, or his ability to abstract a terrifyingly difficult concept into a fun drawing. If someone continued to not understand something, he would introduce metaphors and explain from a different angle."
"The best TA I have had to date. Really enjoyed the semester and looked forward to Friday discussions because of him. Would absolutely love to have Nathan as a professor."
"I would think that he has been teaching for years, only to find out it was the first semester he was working as a TA -- a real gem!!"
"He really taught students how to methodically solve difficult problems and broke them down into parts that were more clear and digestible. I really appreciated how his patience and his up-beat energy when helping students. "
"I was very comfortable asking questions and was not afraid to say that I didn’t understand a concept. He really took the time to make sure everyone’s questions were answered and he explains thing in a way that’s less complicated."
"Nathan made an effort to get to know us, which in such a large discussion group is mostly unheard of for TAs. He actually made flashcards in the beginning of the semester to learn our names. He consistently took difficult material and showed us methodological ways to approach problems, helping me fully understand how to actually approach the abstract concepts."
"I like how understanding you are of us like you know the material is hard and you spend lots of time making sure everyone understands everything."
"His kindness shines through in every interaction, and he always ensures no one is left behind."
"Personable, never made students feel "stupid" or "silly" for any questions, extremely patient and clearly understood the material very well"
"Not once did he lose his temper with us, and not once did he fail to show us his compassion for teaching and for his students. That is very rare in a TA or even for a professor."
"Very patient and great at going through problems step by step, and has an impeccable sense of humor (the highest priority for any educator!)"
"He has the perfect personality for teaching, the voice as well is strong and the way he explains things so simplified without taking away the complexity of topics and without oversimplifying just making a problem understandable is amazing."
"I also liked that he gave us ample time to approach the problem ourselves with hints and guidance along the way. I felt like I was being pushed the right amount without feeling too lost at any given point. I also loved that he listened to our proposals and explained to us why they wouldn’t work and redirected us if we were going the wrong way."
"You’re literally one of the best TA’s that I’ve ever had, and lowkey wished you were the teacher at times. You made really confusing concepts so clear by explaining it really intuitive ways. You somehow managed to make this class fun and I love how you really gave us a chance to work through the problems. I think you would be an amazing teacher, USC would be so much better off to have you as a professor."
"Nathan is just overall fun!! His discussion sections and office hours are so popular, more than any other TA I know. It's not unusual to see students sitting on the floor because there is no space, or just standing up the entire 2 hours of his office hours (I've done that before and it's so worth it)."
"Nathan is extremely patient with his students, taking necessary time to explain concepts in a way that anyone can understand. He has a very helpful methods of approaching algorithm problems that I used on every exam. He also is very knowledgeable about the material, and is open to any feedback from students on other possible approaches to solutions."
"Nathan’s strengths lie in his ability to consolidate large amounts of difficult information in to a digestible manner. His willingness to answer all questions and stay back sets him apart from other TAs. His passion shines through and it’s clear he truly cares about the students."
