Structures and Civil Engineering

Over the course of this week, we dove into the the world of civil engineering and worked on two truss bridges and a structural design process research paper to gain a deeper understanding of how the structures that surround us are made. We collaboratively designed a 2D bridge in the 2016 Bridge Designer software and a 3D bridge in Model Smart 3D. After the completion of these designs, we put each bridge into a virtual simulation to test their performance, and both of our bridges turned out to be successful.

What We Learned:

  • what joints and members are

  • how to design and calculate the forces of compression and tension on joints of truss bridges

  • the costs behind bridge making

  • the design process of different types of structures that civil engineers encounter

  • the basics behind what a civil engineer is and does
