The History and Heritage of Americas Catholic Church. (n.d.). https://www.nationalshrine.org/history
The basilica has many examples of gift giving mostly in the form of chapels. The Catholic Church is a widespread denomination that comes from many cultures, however historically the United States has not been Catholic, so expressions of Catholic faith tend to be connect with immigrant cultures.
With more and more immigrant Catholics arriving into the United States a need arises to accommodate these groups. These accommodations come through the form of mass in other languages, cultural festivities, and church buildings. The city of Washington is very diverse, leading to cultural church communities being established throughout, such as Hispanic, Ethiopian, and Chinese services offered. However there are still many communities that do not have a huge presence in the city, but they still wish to be represented in the capital. Being represented in Washington is so important because it shows that these immigrant cultures do have a place in this country no matter what struggles they have faced.
The Byzantine-Ruthenian Chapel at the Basilica (n.d.). https://www.nationalshrine.org/blog/celebrating-the-50th-anniversary-of-the-byzantine-ruthenian-chapel
In the 1800-1900s many immigrants from Austria-Hungary arrived in the United States that were Byzantine Catholics. These Catholics and there culture were poorly received into the existing church, leading to many joining the Eastern Orthodox Church. This led to an exarchate being formed for these Catholics in 1924, this chapel was dedicated on the 50th anniversary of the exarchates formation.

In the artwork of the Ruthenian Chapel we can see the Statue of Liberty in one of the murals. This is significant because it represents the arrival of the immigrant Ruthenian community into the country through New York City. The Statue of Liberty is also seen as a symbol of immigration to many other communities as many other groups of people first entered the country through Ellis Island.

These are just some of the examples of dedications in the basilica to immigrant Catholics. These dedications are gifts from different cultures to the United States allowing all those in the country and who visit the capital to look into these devotions. It can also be seen as a gift of reciprocity to the United States, thanking the country for allowing them to succeed and practice their faith in the country. In a way this is represented by the fact that these devotions are allowed to be built in Americas Catholic Church, allowing those who are far from home to see a piece of their culture.

Jubilee 2025 Logo (n.d.). https://portlanddiocese.org/jubilee-2025-logo
A jubilee is when the Pope initiates a special year for followers to become closer to God, with a major focus being on pilgrimages to Rome and other locations. The National Shrine was declared a local site of pilgrimage by the Archdiocese of Washington for 2025.
These are upcoming or ongoing pilgrimages hosted by the National Shrine. This church is an important location for different communities to have their pilgrimages and connect with others of their culture. It is also a site that allows Catholics of all cultures to come together and worship as a united people. Gift giving is also present in pilgrimages as the different cultures have been given the gift to have their own events relatively often, and this is particularly more important for these communities in a jubilee year as it allows those who can not leave the country to still receive plenary indulgences for visiting jubilee sites.
