Seafloor Pressure Data: Bridging Geophysics and Physical Oceanography
The main goals of the workshop are to (1) understand the challenges and opportunities of using pressure seafloor data for geophysics and physical oceanography and (2) explore potential synergies and develop plans for closer collaboration between geophysicists and physical oceanographers. The workshop will also bring together diverse physical oceanographers who work on different topics including coastal processes, sea level, and basin circulations into potential collaborations.
Vendor
GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
Address: Wischhofstraße 1-3, 24148 Kiel, Germany
Programs
The workshop will be two full days. Please plan to get to Kiel the day before. Otherwise, it will be difficult to get to the conference room on time.
Confirmed keynote speakers:
Chris Hughes (University of Liverpool)
Henryk Dobslaw (GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences)
William Wilcock (University of Washington)
Ryota Hino (Tohoku University)
Marcos Moreno (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile)

Travel
Kiel, located on Germany’s Baltic coast, is easily accessible by several means of transportation. The nearest major airport is Hamburg Airport (HAM), about 90 kilometers south of Kiel. The most convenient way from HAM to Kiel is taking a bus (https://kielius-onlinebuchung.de). A bus departs from the airport hourly. Alternatively, you can take a train (Deutsche Bahn) or drive. If arriving from Scandinavia, ferry services operate between Kiel and cities like Gothenburg (Sweden) and Oslo (Norway).
Lodging
Most hotels are on the west side of the fjord and GEOMAR is on the east side. The easiest way to get to GEOMAR from those hotels is to take the 12 minutes ferry.
A list of recommended hotels can be found here. You are responsible to book your own hotel rooms. If you share, make sure to request a double bed room with two separate beds. Please plan to arrive on Tuesday April 28th and leave after 5 pm on April 30th.
The timetable of Ferry and a simple map can be found here. Please note that GEOMAR is at ferry station Wellingdorf and the hotels on the west side is at station Reventlou.
If you have time to explore Kiel before or after the workshop, here is a list of the top 20 things you must see in Kiel. Try a fish sandwich at Moby on the Kiellinie (near the ferry terminal) or watch from the lock viewing platform as small sailboats pass through the lock alongside large cargo ships entering and leaving the Kiel Canal.
