Veterans Day 2021

JROTC students representing Curtis High School in the Veterans Parade in Auburn, WA.

Veterans Day 2021 @ CHS

JROTC and Visual/Audio Production students worked together in creating video segments played throughout the week during the Veteran Virtual Assemblies. Students recognized and paid service to each branch of the military, and CHS veteran staff members.

JROTC Basic leadership Training

JROTC had a great trip out to the Cispus Learning Center on October 15 and 16th where we conducted a modified BLT (Basic Leadership Training) camp. We had 77 cadets attend (40 on day 1 and 37 on day 2). The cadets did a great job and earned meritorious promotions to their next rank.

Environmental Science

We have a variety of young adults taking CTE classes every year, representing a growing variety of ethnic backgrounds and first-languages. I had an Arabic-speaking student in first semester Environmental Science who struggled with the academic English of the discipline and end up, as hard as she tried, without enough earned points to pass.

I offered her a 'virtual-version' of a credit retrieval program that involved preparing answers to sixteen questions that covered all first semester Environmental Science topics; she then needed to come to Curtis for a face-to-face (socially distance maintained) 'interview' in which she had to orally provide complete and correct answers to seven of those questions.

A school 'team' supported her preparations--she got the questions translated into Arabic; a district English Language Learner (ELL) teacher helped her create answers to the questions, and her Curtis counselor set up back up translation support--so that on the interview day she was ready! She was able to consistently use many scientific terms in answering seven questions over fifteen minutes from memory. She definitely earned credit in Environmental Science first semester!

Principles of Engineering

After analyzing forces in trusses, we put our knowledge of structures to the test on Popsicle Stick Bridges.
