We are so excited for you to join us at UPrep Schools in September! As your child spends the summer soaking up the sunshine and making memories, we also want to help you prepare them for the first few weeks of kindergarten. Kindergarten is an exciting time with new learning and many important milestones. As your child grows they will move from learning the alphabet to reading, writing, telling detailed stories and expressing their opinions. Below are a few things that you can do this summer to help them get “reading ready.”
Kindergarten starts with introducing students to the alphabet; practicing letter names and sounds with your child during the summer will help them feel familiar (and successful!) with the lessons their teacher is delivering in the classroom. In kindergarten, students learn that letters have names as well as sounds; working on the name and the sound together helps students think about how reading and spelling go hand-in-hand. The example below shows how we would teach the name and the sound for “T” and “U”.
There are many fun, easy ways to work with your child on letters and sounds this summer.
As adults, we don't often focus on the sounds that letters make because our brain does that work automatically now. This is a great video for ensuring that you are saying all the sounds correctly to help your child.
