Prof. Dr. Rona Patey (University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom)

Title: The Journey to Widen Access to Medicine: Progress and Remaining Challenges

Rona (MBChB, FRCA, FRCS, MEd) graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1982 and has been a Consultant Anaesthetist in Aberdeen since 1991. She has held several lead roles relating to her NHS work including Lead for Resuscitation Training, Lead for Intensive Care, Lead for Anaesthetic Senior Staff Group. She was appointed as Director of the Foresterhill Clinical Skills Centre in 2001. In 2011 she was appointed as Head of the Division of Medical and Dental Education and in 2015 as the Director of the Institute for Education in Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Aberdeen. In this latter role she has responsibility for a team of approximately 140 members of staff and the admissions, educational delivery and educational governance of undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare and medical sciences programmes in the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She has been an Education Associate with the GMC since 2016 and has held a number of other roles in medical education including Chair of the Scottish Clinical Skills Network (2007-10) and Chair of the Scottish Medical Education Deans Group (2015-19.) She has a long-held interest in education for patient safety, in particular ‘learning from error’ and ‘human factors’.

Prof. Dr. Nilesh Kumar Mitra & Mr. Hasnain Zafar Baloch (International Medical University, Malaysia)

Title: Instructional Design in Online Micro-credential Course

Professor Dr Nilesh Kumar Mitra has been teaching anatomy to medical and health science students since last 27 years and topics of Health Professions Education to post graduate students since last 10 years. Presently he is the Dean, Teaching and Learning of International Medical University. He has worked as Associate Dean, Technology Enhanced Learning in IMU since 2020. He has received his MBBS degree from R G Kar Medical College, Calcutta University and Master of Surgery from Nagpur University, India. Prof Nilesh has completed Masters in Education from Open University, Malaysia. Prof Nilesh has worked as curriculum coordinator of pre-clinical phase of IMU MBBS program for many years and played significant role in development of curriculum map and initiation of online Moodle-based assessment in IMU. He has earned several national and international awards including Liza Chako memorial gold medal for best publication in Journal of Anatomical Society of India 2006, Best Poster Award in Asia-Pacific Congress of Anatomy 2016, Achievement award for e-learning IMU 2017 and best oral presentation award in MAEMHS conference 2018.

Hasnain Zafar Baloch is a senior manager, e-Learning with IMU. In this role, Hasnain manages and leads e- Learning team consisting of Instructional Designer, Graphic Designer, Multimedia Designer, LMS administrators, Portal Management, providing all aspects of online, blended, Open and Distance Learning (ODL), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) and including Instructional Design and e-Learning Strategies. He has more than twenty-five years’ hands-on experience with implementing e-Learning and technology enhanced learning in higher education. Hasnain holds Master of Science (Computer Science) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia.


AP Dr. Chen Zhi Xiong (National University of Singapore, Singapore)

Title: Broadening Medical Education for Future Healthcare 

Zhi Xiong is Assistant Dean (Education) of NUS Medicine and a Centre for Medical Education (CenMED) Associate. Deeply interested in international professional development, he is Chairperson of Asia-Pacific Biomedical Science Educators Association (APBSEA) and a Board Member of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE). In pediatric cancer research, Zhi Xiong is seeking new therapies and new ways of monitoring disease as Principal Investigator of the Neurodevelopment and Cancer Laboratory at N2CR, an Affiliate Member of National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) and a Joint Scientist of KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). Involved in the education of medical, dental, pharmacy and life sciences students, Zhi Xiong is exploring ways to broaden health professions education and promote transdisciplinary learning with specific interests in the role of medical sciences in health professions practice, faculty development, student affairs and medical education technology.

AP Dr. Sivakumar Arunachalam (International Medical University, Malaysia)

Title: Professional Competence through Entrustable Professional Activities in Health
Professions Education 

Dr Sivakumar is Associate Professor on School of Dentistry in International Medical University. He has completed BDS in 2000 from Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University and MDS (Orthodontics) in 2004 from College of Dental Sciences, Manipal. He was University Gold medalist in BDS and he was trained in orthodontic techniques using Standard Edgewise and Pre-adjusted Edgewise mechanics. He was awarded diploma in membership (MOrth RCSEd, 2006) and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK (FDS RCSEd, 2016). Currently, Dr Sivakumar is Associate Dean for quality and stakeholders engagement at IMU School of Dentistry.

Dr. Intan Idiana Hassan (Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia)

Title: Designing and Implementing Micro-credentials in Health Profession Programs 

Dr Intan Idiana Hassan is a senior lecturer of nursing at Universiti Sains Malaysia with master in medical education and PhD in nursing gerontology. Her areas of expertise are women’s health, nursing education, online learning, gerontology, mixed-method research and the development of the online module. Presently, she has been appointed as Coordinator for Micro-credential in the School of Health Science, USM, Advisor Micro-credential development for USIM and Certified Advisor Ebook for the Malaysia EBook Entrepreneur Club. She has won Gold Medal for International Innovation Educational Award in 2021 for one of her micro-credential modules and the Grand Award for Ebook Top Sales 2021 and 2022 from Master Shiro Global Academy and Malaysia Ebook Entrepreneur Club. 


Dr. Nur Izah Ab Razak (Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia)

Title: Education Digitalisation: Augmented Reality as an Immersive Learning Method for Medical and Health Professions in the Metaverse World

Nur Izah Ab Razak obtained her undergraduate degree, MBBS (Malaya) in 2007, and pursued a Ph.D. in Diabetic, Renal, Endocrine, and Metabolic Medicine through the fast-track method at the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences, University of Glasgow. Her research interests include metabolic medicine, endocrine-related topics, metaverse immersive learning (i.e., augmented reality), medical knowledge digitalisation, and Islamic medicine. She has invented 13 innovations, with most of them being augmented reality development, some medical PAC systems, and gaming boards with various medical and health themes. She has been granted over 20 copyrights for the inventions. She was awarded multiple accolades for her innovations, including six gold medals, three silver medals, and three bronze medals from international and national science and technology exhibitions. Currently, she holds a position as a senior medical lecturer, medical practitioner, and physiologist at Universiti Putra Malaysia's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.


Dr. Rafia Minhas (Central Park Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan)

Title: Using Microlearning as a Faculty Development Tool: A Case Study from Pakistan

Dr. Rafia Minhas is heading the medical education department at Central Park Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan. Her interests include curriculum development, innovations in teaching and learning, faculty development, and entrepreneurship in healthcare. She is a dentist and medical educationist with multiple publications to her credit. She has done many short courses online and has explored micro learning from a student’s perspective as well.
