Toward Co-Creation in Japanese Language Education and Japan Studies in the Digital Age: Insights from Two Decades of Japanese Language Education in Malaysia

Dr. Kaori Kimura is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of East Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, at the University of Malaya, where she is also a member of the Malaysia–Japan Research Centre. Born in Osaka, Japan, she received her MA and PhD in Japanese Applied Linguistics from Waseda University. Her research interests include Japan Studies, Japanese language education, international education, and collaborative learning in interdisciplinary contexts. She has taught Japanese language and communication to university students. She has also contributed to the professional development of Japanese language teachers in Japan and Malaysia. To promote reflective practice and mutual learning among educators, she has co-organized and facilitated workshops on teachers' reflection through the Teachers' Practice Trinity Model. Currently, she teaches courses on Japanese society, ranging from everyday life to workplace culture, through interdisciplinary and inquiry-based approaches.
She also develops collaborative international learning opportunities by connecting university students with Japanese professionals, companies, and organizations through industry–academia partnership projects. Her educational practice emphasizes dialogue, critical reflection, and mutual learning. Her current work aims to bridge Japan Studies and Japanese language education by promoting collaboration among researchers, students, and industry in ASEAN through interdisciplinary and collaborative learning. Her recent publications include “Japan Studies and Beginner Motivation in Language Learning: Exploring Authentic Materials and Pedagogical Approaches,” published in the International Journal of East Asian Studies.

マレーシア・マラヤ大学人文社会科学部東アジア研究科上級講師。同大学マレーシア・日本研究センター研究員。大阪生まれ。早稲田大学大学院において日本語応用言語学で修士号および博士号取得。専門は、日本研究、日本語教育、国際教育、および学際的な文脈における協働的学習。これまで大学生を対象とした日本語およびコミュニケーション教育に携わるとともに、教育実践の省察と教師同士の相互学習を促進するため「日本語教師の専門性の三位一体モデル」に基づくリフレクション・ワークショップの企画・運営を行うなど、日本およびマレーシアにおいて日本語教師を対象とした研修にも従事。
現在はマラヤ大学において日常生活から職場文化までを扱う日本社会に関する授業を学際的かつ探求型のアプローチを用いて実践しており、産学連携プロジェクトを通して大学生と日本の企業・団体・専門家をつなぐ国際協働学習の機会を創出している。教育実践では対話、批判的省察、および相互学習を重視しており、現在は学際的・協働的学習を通してASEAN諸国における研究者・学生の連帯を促進することで日本研究と日本語教育の架橋を目指している。
最近の論文に「Japan Studies and Beginner Motivation in Language Learning: Exploring Authentic Materials and Pedagogical Approaches」(International Journal of East Asian Studies)がある。

Ismatul Khasanah, PhD, is an accomplished Indonesian Japanese language expert. She serves as an Associate Professor within the Department of Languages and Literature at the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya in Malang, Indonesia. Dr Khasanah boasts an extensive academic background centred on Japanese language education. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Universitas Negeri Surabaya in 1999, followed by a Master's degree (M.Pd.) from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in 2004. Seeking international expertise, she relocated to Nagoya University, Japan, completing both her Master of Education (M.Ed.) and PhD in Japanese Language Education at Hiroshima University between 2007 and 2012. Her research and areas of expertise span Japanese language education, applied linguistics (sociolinguistics), technology in language learning, and cultural studies. Dr. Khasanah actively contributes to her field through numerous scientific publications and registered intellectual property, including language learning modules and intercultural educational animations.
イスマトゥル・カサナ氏
インドネシア・ブラウィジャア大学文化学部言語文学科准教授。インドネシアの日本語教育分野における第一人者。日本語教育を専門とする幅広い学術的経歴を有す。1999年にスラバヤ州立大学で学士号を取得後、2004年にインドネシア教育大学において教育学修士号を取得。その後、名古屋大学でさらに研究を深め、2007年から2012年に広島大学大学院において日本語教育学で修士号および博士号を取得。専門分野は、日本語教育、応用言語学(社会言語学)、言語学習におけるテクノロジーの活用、文化研究など多岐にわたる。これまでに数多くの学術論文を発表するとともに、語学学習モジュールや異文化教育アニメーションなどの登録知的財産を通して日本語教育分野の発展に大きく貢献している。
Ms. Kanlaya Saenjaimoon

Ms. Kanlaya Saenjaimoon is a lecturer in the Japanese Program at the Department of Eastern Languages, Faculty of Humanities, Naresuan University, Thailand. She also serves as Head of the Japanese Program and Deputy Head of the Department of Eastern Languages. She received her M.A. in Japanese Linguistics from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Japan. For more than 20 years, she has been engaged in Japanese language education as well as Japanese–Thai interpreting. She teaches Japanese language, translation and interpretation, and Business Japanese at the university. She is also involved in curriculum development and the creation of teaching materials for Japanese language education. In addition, she has professional experience as a Japanese–Thai interpreter, translator, and project coordinator in both the private sector and international cooperation organisations. These experiences have influenced her teaching, and she tries to connect classroom learning with practical communication in society. In recent years, her interests have expanded to the use of generative AI in Japanese language education. She has been exploring its application in classroom teaching and the development of teaching materials, while also examining its impact on student learning and the challenges it presents for language education.
カンラヤー・セーンジャイムーン氏
タイ・ナレースワン大学人文学部東洋言語学科日本語プログラム講師。日本語プログラム長および東洋言語学科副学科長兼任。東京外国語大学大学院にて日本語学を専攻し、修士号を取得。20年以上にわたり、日本語教育および日泰通訳の分野に携わる。現在は大学において日本語、翻訳・通訳、ビジネス日本語などの科目を担当するとともに、日本語教育のカリキュラム開発や教材開発にも従事。また、民間企業や国際協力機関において、日泰通訳・翻訳者およびプロジェクト・コーディネーターとしての実務経験も有し、こうした経験を生かし、教室での学びと実社会におけるコミュニケーションを結び付ける教育実践に取り組んでいる。近年は日本語教育における生成AIの活用にも関心を寄せ、授業や教材開発への活用を試みるとともに、学習への影響や教育上の課題についても研究を行っている。

Nguyen Thi Bich Hue, PhD, has completed the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Business Administration, Kobe University, and obtained a Ph.D. in Business Administration in September 2014. She is currently Head of the Business Japanese Department, Faculty of Japanese, Foreign Trade University. Since 2006, she has been engaged in Japanese language education. Her areas of specialization include Business Japanese education, Japanese corporate culture, Japanese corporate management, practical Business Japanese education in the fields of business administration and economics, active learning-based teaching methods, and human resource development through industry–academia collaboration.
グエン・ティ・ビック・フエ氏
ベトナム・貿易大学日本語学部ビジネス日本語学科長。神戸大学大学院経営学研究科博士後期課程修了、2014年博士号(経営学)取得。2006年より日本語教育に携わる。専門はビジネス日本語教育、日本企業文化、日本企業経営、経営学・経済学分野における実践的なビジネス日本語教育、アクティブ・ラーニングを活用した教授法、ならびに産学連携による人材育成。
Ms. Francesca Murphy Ventura

Ms Francesca Murphy Ventura is a Japanese Language Education Adviser at The Japan Foundation, Manila. She earned her MA in Japanese Language Education in 2007 through a joint program of The Japan Foundation Japanese‑Language Institute, Urawa, and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Tokyo. She previously taught Japanese at the Nihongo Center Foundation and Ateneo de Manila University before moving to the corporate sector in 2013 and returning to language education in 2022. She also contributed to the development of enTree! Halina Be A Nihongojin, an open‑access learning resource for teaching Japanese in Philippine high schools under the Department of Education’s Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL). Her work focuses on teacher professional development, curriculum innovation, and nurturing future leaders in the field. In addition, she helps design and deliver courses for the Japanese Language Teaching Series offered by The Japan Foundation, Manila in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Open University’s Faculty of Education, expanding access to high‑quality professional learning across the Philippines and beyond. Her current interests include integrating intercultural communicative competence (ICC) into language instruction and exploring immersive technologies including the metaverse to support authentic language learning and use, intercultural learning, and multicultural teaching in digital environments.
フランチェスカ・マーフィー・ヴェンチュラ氏
国際交流基金マニラ日本文化センター 日本語教育アドバイザー。2007年、国際交流基金日本語国際センター(浦和)と政策研究大学院大学(東京)の共同プログラムにおいて日本語教育学の修士号を取得。日本語センター財団およびアテネオ・デ・マニラ大学での日本語指導を経て、2013年に民間企業へ転身。2022年より再び語学教育の現場に復帰した。フィリピン教育省の外国語特別プログラム(SPFL)に基づき開発された、同国の高校向け日本語オープンアクセス教材『enTree! Halina Be A Nihongojin』の制作にも貢献。現在は、教師の専門能力開発、カリキュラム革新、そして同分野における次世代リーダーの育成に注力している。さらに、国際交流基金マニラ日本文化センターとフィリピン大学オープンユニバーシティ(UPOU)教育学部が共同提供する「日本語教育シリーズ」のコース設計・実施に携わり、フィリピン国内外における質の高い専門教育へのアクセス拡大を推進している。現在の主な関心分野は、異文化間コミュニケーション能力(ICC)と言語教育の統合、およびメタバースをはじめとする没入型テクノロジーの活用。デジタル環境における実践的な言語学習・使用、異文化学習、そして多文化教育の支援に向けた探求を続けている。
Dr. Zaid Mohd Zin

Zaid Mohd Zin, PhD, is a distinguished Japanese language and linguistics expert at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), with over 30 years of experience in education, research, and international academic collaboration. His research specialises in Japanese linguistics, applied contrastive linguistics, semantics, and comparative vocabulary studies. A prolific scholar, Dr Zaid has spearheaded funded research projects, supervised postgraduate students, and published extensively in refereed journals. He has contributed significantly to national Japanese language education through academic leadership, textbook evaluation, and curriculum development. Beyond traditional academia, Dr Zaid uniquely bridges culture and linguistics. He is a module writer for Japanese language courses in Islamic tourism and serves as a mentor and trainer for Selangor state mosque tour guides. His notable achievements include translating Hang Tuah: Catatan Okinawa into Japanese. Dr Zaid frequently serves as an invited international speaker, panelist, and consultant, bringing invaluable multifaceted insights to this year's panel.

マレーシア・プトラ大学(UPM)日本語・日本語学研究者。30年以上にわたり教育・研究・国際学術交流の分野に携わる。専門分野は、日本語学、応用対照言語学、意味論、比較語彙研究。これまで競争的資金を獲得した研究プロジェクトを主導し、多くの大学院生の指導に携わる傍ら、査読付き学術誌に多数の論文を発表。また、学術的リーダーシップ、教科書評価、カリキュラム開発を通じて、マレーシアにおける日本語教育の発展に多大な貢献を果たす。さらに文化と言語学を結びつける独自の活動でも知られており、イスラム観光のための日本語講座のモジュール作成、セランゴール州モスクツアーガイド育成、『ハントゥア:琉球に残る交流の歴史(Hang Tuah: Catatan Okinawa)』の日本語翻訳を手がけるなど業績は多岐に渡る。国際会議での招待講演者、パネリスト、コンサルタントとしての登壇も多く、多角的な視点と豊富な経験に基づく知見を提供している。
