Asia Open RAN Academy (AORA) 1st Anniversary Conference

UPM SILab attended AORAโ€™s 1st Anniversary Conference held in Novotel Hotel Cubao last July 20-21,2023 with the theme, ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ญ๐’–๐’•๐’–๐’“๐’† ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ช๐’๐’๐’๐’†๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’Š๐’•๐’š ๐’˜๐’Š๐’•๐’‰ ๐‘ถ๐’‘๐’†๐’ ๐‘น๐‘จ๐‘ต ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐‘ถ๐’‘๐’†๐’ ๐‘ต๐’†๐’•๐’˜๐’๐’“๐’Œ๐’”.ย 

The conference highlights how Open RAN opportunities will address connectivity issues in different sectors. Members of UPM SILab attended the panel group discussions and presented connectivity solutions for Philippine healthcare utilizing Open RAN technologies.

UPCM Hepainformatics enters the next stage with the launch of UPM Standards & Interoperability Lab (UPM SILab)

On March 24, 2023, hepatitis informatics in the Philippines progressed to the next level with the launch of the UP Manila Standards & Interoperability Lab (UPM SILab) at the Bay City Ballroom, Citadines Bay Manila City. Dr Janus Ong, project leader, put a spotlight on the scourge of viral hepatitis in the country and Dr Alvin Marcelo explained the role of health data standardization and interoperability in controlling its spread. The UPM SILab was introduced to healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers who gathered for the end-of-project event of "๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Š๐’•๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ช๐’‰๐’“๐’๐’๐’Š๐’„ ๐‘ฝ๐’Š๐’“๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ฏ๐’†๐’‘๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’•๐’Š๐’” ๐‘ป๐’“๐’†๐’‚๐’•๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’• ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’”๐’„๐’‚๐’…๐’† ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’“๐’๐’–๐’ˆ๐’‰ ๐‘ฌ๐’๐’†๐’„๐’•๐’“๐’๐’๐’Š๐’„ ๐‘ด๐’†๐’…๐’Š๐’„๐’‚๐’ ๐‘น๐’†๐’„๐’๐’“๐’…๐’”." This event marked the culmination of a collaborative effort led by the UP College of Medicine, aimed at advancing healthcare informatics and improving the management of chronic viral hepatitis in the Philippines.ย 

The event kicked off with welcoming remarks from Dr. Carmencita Padilla, the Chancellor of UP Manila, and Dr. Edward Wang, the Vice Chancellor for Research of UP Manila. They expressed their appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the project team and emphasized the importance of the project in addressing the burden of chronic viral hepatitis in the country.

ย Asia-Pacific Association for Medical Informatics (APAMI) 2022 Conference ย 

UPM SILab, represented by Dr. Alvin Marcelo and Dr. Miguel Aljibe, attended the 12th Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Association for Medical Informatics (APAMI) in Taipei last October 14-16, 2022.ย 

On the second day of the conference, a special session was held with the Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN) - the Community of Interoperability Labs 2022 (COIL 2022).ย  The hybrid (online and face-to-face) session was attended by representatives of interoperability labs from Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Laos. The different labs consolidated their partnerships and set up a framework for sharing resources and best practices with each other.

UPM SILab - Taiwan Knowledge Exchange

Six students from the ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐š๐ข๐ฉ๐ž๐ข ๐”๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ฌ (๐๐“๐”๐๐‡๐’) arrived in Manila for a month-long knowledge exchange last August 2022. Their objective is to understand the Philippine Health IT landscape and contribute to interoperability awareness.ย 

HepaCon 2: Viral Hepatitis Datathon

The executive members of UPM SILab presented during the HepaCon Workshop 2: Connecting EMRs through FHIR, a Viral Hepatitis Datathon which was organized by UP Manila last August 18, 2022 at the Bayleaf Intramuros Hotel in Manila. The workshop was spearheaded by the team behind the project, โ€œMonitoring the Chronic Viral Hepatitis Treatment Cascade Through Electronic Medical Records.โ€


Dr. Janus Ong, the project leader for Viral Hepatitis Registry, delivered the opening remarks and highlighted the importance of building stakeholder consensus towards interoperability in the eradication of viral hepatitis.


Dr. Geohari Hamoy, the project manager for the Monitoring the Chronic Viral Hepatitis Treatment Cascade Through Electronic Medical Records, presented the background project and the hepatitis situation in the country. The primary objective of the project is to develop a data terminology service where healthcare institutions can integrate their existing EMRs.


The workshop objectives and the WHO SMART Guidelines were introduced by Dr. Alvin Marcelo, UPM SILabโ€™s Laboroatory Director and the Health Informatics Lead of UP Manila. โ€œSMARTโ€ stands for Standards-based, Machine-readable, Adaptive, Requirements-based, and Testable set of digital health components that result in digital interoperable systems. AeHIN General Meeting 2022

Members of UPM SILab attended the 2022 Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN) General Meeting co-hosted with the Department of Health (DOH) Philippines held in Manila last October 10 to 12, 2022. The general meeting coincides with AeHINโ€™s 10th year anniversary and has the theme: Accelerating Digital Health towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
