Here is a photo essay on the various unit libraries of the University of the Philippines Manila.
We highlight a few of the buildings that used to house our library collection. Recent photographs of the libraries and buildings are featured here as well.

Philippine Medical School at the time had no organized library, although there was a small collection of books and journals in the different departments of the school and hospital.
The Medicine and Allied Health Sciences collection of the neighboring Bureau of Science Library were almost entirely relied upon by students, faculty and other staff.

F.B. Herrera Jr. Medical Library, formerly College of Medicine Library
the medical literature from various departments and units in UP Manila then were gathered and became the collection of the College of Medicine Library.

Construction of the University Library building began in 1928 at its original site along the Padre Faura Street, between Rizal Hall and the University Hall. This building presently houses the Supreme Court.

Philippine General Hospital, 1927

The library finally resumed service for students in January 1946 in the rooms at PGH.

Both the library and the Institute of Hygiene were not spared from serious damage during the liberation of Manila in 1945.

Along with other units of the university, the University Library officially transferred to the new campus at Diliman in 1949.

The Extension Division was created by the Board of Regents during its 547th meeting on June 12, 1951. It proposed the construction of library facilities with an up-to-date, adequate and well distributed collection of books.
The most essential and functional references which have duplicate copies in the main library in Diliman shall be transferred to the "Extension Division Library."

University Library: The Growing Years
The University Library Building was completed and inaugurated in 1995.
The four-storey building came from UP Manila funds and approved by Dr. Ernesto O. Domingo, the UP Manila Chancellor at that time.

The First floor of the University Library houses the General Reading Room, UP Manila Computer Center, Multimedia Room and the Cybernook.
The University Librarian's Office was located on the Second Floor together with the Administrative Office, Technical Services and Conference Room.

The Third Floor houses the Reference Collection and Reading Room.
The University Archives, UP Manila Memorabilia and Filipiniana Room are located at the Fourth Floor of the University Library Building.

College of Allied Medical Professions Library
The College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP) Library was inaugurated on November 1990 and, it is used to be located at the Ground Floor of the Damian Hall in Padre Faura but, transferred at Third Floor of the same building in the year 2000.
Its current location is at the academic site of UP Manila - CAMP Building along Pedro Gil Street.

The College of Arts and Sciences Library was renovated in the year 1991. The reading rooms, stacks and staff work areas were expanded.
CAS Library is located at the Rizal Hall in Padre Faura Street, which was built in the 1920s. It is one of the buildings of the original UP campus that survived World War II.
They recently transferred to Gusaling Andres Bonifacio Building due to renovations being done at Rizal Hall.

College of Dentistry Library
The College of Dentistry Library started in 1960 with a small collection of books and journals housed in one of the rooms that was built as an extension of the College of Dentistry in Padre Faura, Manila.
In 2001, it was transferred to its current location at Taft Avenue, corner Pedro Gil Street.

F.B. Herrera Jr. Medical Library
In 2016, the building where F.B. Herrera Jr. Medical Library was located were evacuated due to their physical structure damages identified during the building inspection and continuous monitoring of the activities done in the Academic Center evacuation site.

It was moved to its temporary location at the Faculty Room 2/F Salcedo Hall, Department of Physiology, College of Medicine at Rizal Hall.
At the moment, the collection of F.B. Herrera Medical Jr. Library is temporarily housed in Room 106 Paz Mendoza Building of the College of Medicine.

College of Nursing Library
The building where the College of Nursing Library is located were inaugurated in the year 1997. The library was renovated with funding from the College of Nursing Alumni Association.
CN Library found its home in Sotejo Hall.

National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions Library
The National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions was established by the UP Board of Regents on January 30, 1975. It is located at the NEDA Building Padre Faura Street, Ermita Manila beside the University Registrar and National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences.
The NTTC-HP Library collection is housed in the building of the College.

College of Pharmacy Library
In 1935, the College of Pharmacy (a School then) were established with a Library functioning separate from the Main and Medical Library. They transferred in Diliman in 1949, and was renamed to Pharmacy Library in 1964.
Finally, in 1984, the College, together with the College of Pharmacy Library, transferred to Manila to become part of the Health Sciences Complex, currently the University of the Philippines Manila.

College of Public Health Library
The College of Public Health Library is located on the Ground Floor of Lara Hall, College of Public Health Building.
Established in 1931, this is the library in UP Manila that initiated the first local area network and developed an electronic bibliographic database of existing library resources.

University Library and Learning Commons Building
This new library building will soon house all the unit libraries of UP Manila.
