1 | Philippine Medical School
The University Library traces its roots in the department libraries of the Philippine Medical School, the precursor of the UP College of Medicine and very first academic unit of UP.

2 | Library Science Pensionados at the University of Wisconsin
Who would have thought that library science profession, now dominated by women, originated with five young men? According to Rachel K. Shenk, Director of Wisconsin Library School in 1964, "It is interesting to note that practically all library activities in the Philippines today stem from the work of five young men who attended the University of Wisconsin Library School in the 1920s, and who returned to their homes to the start the first libraries in their native land."

3 | Philippine Bureau of Science Library
Mary Polk, prior to serving the University of the Philippines as University Librarian and Professor of Library Science, was appointed Librarian of the Philippine Bureau of Science Library. Her lengthy career with the library would leave a mark in the history of Philippine libraries.

4 | Library Science Education
The image shows the University of the Philippines in Padre Faura Street in Ermita, Manila where library science education was first offered in 1914 under the College of Liberal Arts. However, classes were held at Philippine Library and the Bureau of Science Library.

5 | The Library Mirror
The article "Development of Libraries in the Philippines" by Solomon V. Arnaldo, the Chief of Research and Reference, Commonwealth of the Philippines mentioned that there was a "Library Club" at the University of the Philippines, organized during or sometime after the first World War and, that their official organ was named "The Library Mirror."

6 | Inauguration of the University Library
The UP Board of Regents at its 223rd meeting on March 9, 1922 recorded: “It is recommended that the Library of the University be designated as the Department of Library Science to be placed on a level of equality with other departments of instruction for the service of all colleges of the university system” (Abstracts on Library Matters...1922, p. 29).
In March 17, 1931 the University Library was inaugurated.
This is a vintage photo of Gonzales Hall in UP Diliman that has been home to the University Library for years.

7 | The Philippine Index Medicus
This is the cover page of The Philippine Index Medicus, the first and only index of Filipino medical journals. It is considered to be the greatest contribution of Aquilino Y. Argosino to the Philippine Medical Literature.
There is also an introduction to the medical bibliography prepared by Gabriel A. Bernando, a well-known librarian, bibliographer and scholar.

8 | University Hall
The site where the Library Building will be located at that time, was on the East side, next to the University Hall (now the Department of Justice occupies this building) and Rizal Hall.
The University Hall, was the first building built by W. Parson in the UP- Manila Campus in 1914.

9 | Provided library service from the Philippine General Hospital
The library resumed service for students in January 1946 in a room at the Philippine General Hospital for students of Law, Liberal Arts and Education. Another room at the dispensary for Medicine and Pharmacy students.

10 | Transfer of University Library to UP Diliman
Along with other units of the university, the University Library officially transferred to the new campus at Diliman in 1949. It stayed there for a time at the College of Law building (Malcolm Hall) before finally settling in its very own building at the heart of the Academic Oval.
