Dr. Rabajante's research lies at the intersection of algorithm development, mathematical modeling, quantitative risk assessment, and data analytics of complex biological and social systems, with particular emphasis on infectious disease dynamics and One Health applications. Through his work, he seeks to harness mathematics, data, and systems thinking not only to understand complexity, but also to transform scientific knowledge into solutions that matter to society.
His academic journey reflects a sustained commitment to interdisciplinary learning and the pursuit of knowledge across fields. He earned his Doctor of Science in Mathematical and Systems Engineering (Environment and Energy Systems) from Shizuoka University, Japan, in 2016 as a Japanese Government Monbukagakusho: MEXT scholar; his MS in Applied Mathematics (Mathematics in Life and Physical Sciences) from the University of the Philippines Diliman as a DOST scholar; a Global Master Certificate in Business Analytics from the Eli Broad College of Business, Michigan State University; and his BS in Applied Mathematics (Operations Research) from UPLB. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Curriculum Studies and Learning Sciences at Edgewood University in Madison, Wisconsin.
He also completed a Higher Education Teaching Certificate from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard University; a Medical Statistics Certificate from Stanford University; and a Professional Certificate in Online Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His training across mathematics, systems engineering, analytics, statistics, and education reflects his belief that complex problems are best approached through the creative integration of disciplines and perspectives.
Dr. Rabajante has broadened his scientific perspective through academic and research appointments around the world. He has served as Visiting Professor at the Department of Biology, Carleton University in Canada; Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany; and Visiting Scientist at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences in Canada. He attended research schools in mathematical epidemiology at Imperial College London, St. Mary’s Hospital, and in systems biology at The Ohio State University. He also served as a mentor in the Future Leaders Programme of the National University of Singapore. These international experiences have strengthened his commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary, and globally connected science, one that crosses borders and grows through the exchange of ideas.
At the heart of Dr. Rabajante's work is a deep commitment to mentorship, education, and the development of future scientists and scholars. He has mentored numerous undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students, encouraging them to pursue rigorous inquiry while remaining attentive to the real-world significance of their work. He is among the proponents of the PhD in Applied Mathematics, the first doctorate degree in Applied Mathematics in the Philippines, as well as the PhD by Research (Data Analytics and Informatics) program at UPLB. Through these initiatives, he has contributed to creating new pathways for advanced scholarship and expanding the country's capacity in mathematics, analytics, and interdisciplinary research.
He is a Fellow of the UP Resilience Institute and a member of the UP COVID-19 Pandemic Response Team. His expertise has led to research collaborations and consultancy engagements with organizations and institutions including the Asian Development Bank, United Nations Population Fund, Zuellig Family Foundation, World Vision/START Network, PhilRice, Merck, the Department of Finance, Task Force T3, the Supreme Court of the Philippines, and the Province of Bataan. He is a lead member of the Modelling Infectious Diseases in South East Asia (MIDSEA) Network and serves as a board member of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines and the Philippine Society for Mathematical Biology. Across these engagements, he has worked to bring quantitative science beyond academic boundaries and into spaces where evidence, uncertainty, and complex decisions directly affect communities and institutions.
