Poch Enriquez, and his adviser, Dr. Lillian Rodriguez, secured the grand award at the 2nd National Institute of Ecology Competition for Research Papers hosted by National Institute of Ecology of the Republic of Korea last November 2023.
Enriquez’s master’s thesis, “Seed dispersal by water, wind, birds, and bats in the Caliraya Watershed, Laguna”, bested the manuscripts of other ecological research studies under the international category.
In addition to the honor, the student received a cash prize of 2 million Korean won and was published under the Proceedings of the National Institute of Ecology of the Republic of Korea (PNIE) in January.
Sharing their research findings, Enriquez has actively presented their work in local and international conferences including the Freshwater Sciences Conference 2023 in Brisbane, Australia and the 59th Annual Meeting of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation in in Coimbatore, India.
He is also slated to present at the International Union of Forest Research Organizations Division 8 Conference 2023 in Evora, Portugal in October and at the 10th World Conference on Ecological Restoration in Darwin, Australia in November.

In celebration of the TREE Lab webpage launch, here's a video about a Koel parasitizing a Coleto nest. Our short paper about the discovery is in the final stages of formatting in the journal Ornithological Science.
The Asian Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus) is an obligate brood parasite commonly known to parasitize open nests of various passerines. However, in the Philippines, no information on the Asian Koel’s hosts is available. We present the first record of an Asian Koel parasitizing the cavity nest of a Coleto (Sarcops calvus), at the Subic Watershed Forest Reserve, Luzon, Philippines. Our findings provide important insights into the species’ brood parasitism in the Philippines and within its range.
