MMS 173 Assignment 6: END BLOG - ONE SHOT SUMMARY
Looking back at the pictures that I have taken throughout the trimester, I once again realized how much trial and error I had done with for the duration of each assignment. There were also a lot of concepts that I had thought of but ended up getting scrapped either because of unsatisfactory execution or simply because I had found a better idea. Among those sets of pictures, the picture that I have chosen for this blog is one that I took way back for Assignment 4. This was one of the candidates for the “Height” theme but ended up not being chosen because at that time I felt like the angle it was taken at made it look a bit messy. I considered that it lacked deeper thought and the subject was not as clear. Although I liked the effect of the flares from the lights, my impression of it was that it was unsatisfactory. For this reason, I chose it to represent my overall experience during this class.
Of course I do not mean that the class is unsatisfactory but rather the outputs that I had gotten. In a way, I also see this staircase picture as a reflection of my ups and downs during the course. As there were new terms and techniques that I have encountered, I had a hard time navigating especially since I do not have professional experience nor equipment. There were times during the course where I was lost and was not really that confident with what I was doing. At times, I just took pictures without properly considering the subjects that I want to emphasize and at other times, I was putting so much thought but the implementation of techniques was not enough. This made the processes that I went through a bit messy and chaotic before I finally got my best pictures. And while it is a fact that I was rather satisfied with my pictures while I was doing each blog, looking back now, I feel like I could have done more to achieve much better outputs.
My experience with the course throughout the trimester was interesting. I can describe it to be difficult but enjoyable nonetheless. My most noteworthy experiences probably come from the assignments, unsurprisingly. I enjoyed actually doing the techniques that I have learned through the lessons. Other than that, I also enjoyed the process of looking for references and inspiration along with planning the concepts for each photo’s theme. By continuously taking different kinds of pictures, I was able to learn as I go, especially as I learned more about navigating my device’s settings. I came to know about the camera settings to use for specific types of photos and along with it came additional knowledge about lighting amount and positions as well as the variety of photography compositions.
Before starting the course, I set a personal goal of learning more about technical photography terms and techniques as well as grasping skills that I can also apply when making other media types such as videography and video editing. At present, I think that I have indeed achieved my goals for the trimester. Although the execution still needs way more practice, I now know much more about the technical components that make a photo. On top of that, a lot of the concepts that were taught in the class were also very much applicable to other mediums, thus giving me more knowledge that is not just limited to photography. A side note that I would like to add is how I thoroughly enjoyed post-processing, as someone whose current expertise and interest lies in video editing and color correction. Although there wasn't a lot of it done throughout, it was still a portion of the course that I found enjoyable, especially because post-processing is something that is applied with other media as well.
The class to me was very insightful, especially as a multimedia practitioner, however, it is inevitable that I have some regrets. That being said, they all stem from my lack of exploration. Although I had learned a lot, I feel like I could have done more to explore and try out the other ways of taking pictures, particularly composition styles, framing, as well as different photographic effects like the glow effect, bleach bypass, grunge, and more. Perhaps a longer time frame or more small activities could have helped, but at the same time, the class assignments were already decently packed so there was little way to make it happen. Nevertheless, the course has made me appreciate photography more, mostly the process that each photo goes through. It has made me more interested in honing my skills in photography along with trying out the concepts that I have learned but was not able to carry out in class. Though I am not sure if I would ever pursue the medium professionally, I would still be glad to continue learning about it, even if I would only take pictures for personal safekeeping.
As an online learner, the class has encouraged me to go out of my comfort zone, whether it be trying out new techniques in photography or simply just the act of going around the city to look for a suitable subject. Being under an online curriculum allows me to learn at home but at times, it can be stifling and while I am always free to go outside, I rarely have the reason to. Therefore, the course was very helpful in giving me the opportunity to properly explore and observe whether or not there were recent changes in the neighborhood. At the same time, as an aspiring multimedia practitioner, the course has helped me understand the importance of going through the proper process of doing things and not making haste. It has made me realize how important it is to value the time given and use it to observe and analyze things more. As a result, I was able to give myself more room to try out new things and improve on what I already know. By doing so, I was able to know more about stuff like, for example, the effects that different kinds of lighting can do to a photo. On top of that, I was also able to present myself with more output options to choose from.
To conclude, my Photography in Multimedia trimester was full of trial and error but with all things considered, the course for me was a one full of new learnings and is something that has given me a newfound appreciation for exploration as well as the value of time.
