ABSTRACT
This workshop introduces participants to the fundamental tools of mathematical biology through accessible examples grounded in Philippine public health, agriculture, and ecology. Designed for beginners, the session covers three core modeling approaches, namely, difference equations, differential equations, and matrix models. Here, we demonstrate how each framework helps describe biological processes such as disease transmission, population growth, and stage-structured dynamics. Through short lectures, guided exercises, and group activities, participants build and analyze simple models using real-world scenarios relevant to the Philippine context. Emphasis is placed on clear interpretation, conceptual understanding, and the role of modeling in supporting decision-making. By the end of the workshop, participants gain practical modeling skills, confidence in using basic mathematical tools, and an appreciation of how quantitative approaches contribute to addressing biological challenges in the Philippines.
