Now on its eighth iteration, IWOMB is the first workshop series in the Philippines that convenes local mathematical biology researchers and foreign experts working in a wide range of research at the interface of mathematics and life sciences including population dynamics, ecology, developmental biology, biophysics, epidemiology, physiology, among others. Previous IWOMB meetings were held in 2018 (Cebu), 2019 (Bohol), 2020 (University of the Philippines Los Baños), 2021 (University of the Philippines Mindanao, virtual), 2023 (University of the Philippines Baguio), 2024 (Boracay Island), and 2025 (Coron Palawan). The IWOMB in Boracay Island saw the establishment of the first Filipino professional organization that promotes the propagation of knowledge in research and education at the interface of mathematics and the life sciences, the Philippine Society for Mathematical Biology.
Since its inception in 2018, the IWOMB workshop series has been a converging point of emerging and established mathematical modelers and researchers. These workshops have fostered productive collaborations across diverse institutions, enabling participants to pursue research that tackles pressing local and national issues. By collaborating in the IWOMB 2026, UP Visayas mathematical biologists and researchers seize this opportunity to build a strong network of mathematical biologists and modelers, linking them with national and international experts in various fields. The ultimate goal is to develop expertise and UPV niche in mathematical biology that can be directly applied to the unique challenges of our region.
