West Visayas State University | Iloilo City, Philippines
West Visayas State University traces its beginnings to 1902, when it was founded as the Iloilo Normal School during the American colonial period. Its primary mission was to train teachers, making it one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in Western Visayas. In 1965, the school was converted into the West Visayas State College, marking its growth and expansion beyond teacher education. Two decades later, in 1986, it was granted university status and became known as West Visayas State University.
The university’s main campus is located in La Paz, Iloilo City, on a ten-hectare property that has witnessed more than a century of academic and cultural development. The landscape is marked by century-old acacia trees and a mix of heritage and modern academic buildings, reflecting both its history and its progress.
One of the most iconic structures in the university is Quezon Hall, a U-shaped neoclassical building whose construction began in 1919 and was completed in 1926. The hall was named after Manuel L. Quezon, the second President of the Philippines, and has long served as a central landmark of the university. In 2024, the building underwent a major restoration to preserve its historical character while ensuring its continued use for academic purposes.
Beyond the main campus, WVSU has extended its reach through several external campuses in Calinog, Himamaylan, Janiuay, Lambunao, and Pototan. This expansion reflects the institution’s long-standing role in making education accessible throughout Western Visayas.
For more than a century, West Visayas State University has been a fixture in the region, producing educators, health professionals, and public servants who have played significant roles in Western Visayas. Its motto, “Service, Harmony, Excellence, and Truth,” continues to reflect the guiding principles that have shaped its contributions to education and public service.
