The satisfaction of learning something new is never-ending, particularly if it is something that would help ease one’s work. The ABC offices, or the Accounting, Budget, and Cash, plays a significant role in the sustenance of financial resources and operations of anything and everything that involves money. As employees of these offices, they are expected to be able to perform their duties efficiently and effectively by utilizing the right and appropriate knowledge.
In order for the employees of these offices to enhance and build upon their knowledge, the Human Resource Development Office (HRDO) hosted a two-day face-to-face advance spreadsheet training entitled “Beyond the Basics: Spreadsheet Skills Training” on November 20-21, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, located at the Social Hall, 8th Floor of the UP-PGH Central Building. For both days, the training was divided into four (4) modules which aim for the participants to be able to create a formatted Excel Worksheet, applied with formulas and functions, generate a summary report with charts, as well as employ proper file naming and saving conventions.
Two keynote speakers from the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics were invited to impart their knowledge as well as share tips and reminders when using these spreadsheet tools for this training.
To formally open the program. Mr. Jorel A. Manalo, Supervising Administrative Officer of the HRDO, gave an uplifting message. He highlighted the importance of this training in performing their financial work more efficiently, especially for the employees stationed in the Accounting, Budget, and Cash offices. Moreover, he stated that their work, mainly composed of computations, holds more significance than it may seem. He also hoped for this event to be a day full of learning, engagement, and enhancement of the participant’s skillset and to inquire the speakers if they have any queries.
Mr. Ruahden Dang-awan, Assistant Professor from the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the College of Arts and Sciences, discussed the first and third module. The first module includes understanding the navigation tools and shortcuts, saving and file-naming convention, file protection and sharing. Whereas, the third module discusses the fundamental techniques in organizing, managing, and analyzing datasets in both Google Sheet and Microsoft Excel. He also provided light exercises in order for the participants to practice what they have learned right away.
Meanwhile, the second and fourth module was spearheaded by Dr. Liza T. Billones, Professor and Coordinator for Information Technology of the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics at the College of Arts and Sciences in UP Manila. The third module consists of steps in curating efficient data entry practices as well as the basic use of formatting tools in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, while the fourth module discusses advanced formulas such as VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, IF, and mail merging extensions, its functions and its application. She also provided hands-on activities and roamed around the venue to assist the participants who had inquiries and concerns in performing the activities.
As part of motivating the participants in applying what they have learned, each table presented their outputs for the set of guided activities per module.
A representative was chosen for each table and they also shared the parts of the modules that they found challenging or simple.
Both days have ended with impact and passion for learning and collaboration for everyone who attended the training. In total, 99 participants have attended the training, 54 employees came on the first day while 45 employees were on the second day.
The Learning and Development Section of the UP Manila HRDO strives to deliver training programs and caravans that are both conducive and beneficial to our fellow UP Manila constituents.
