Integrating coding with transcription creates a more iterative and insightful analysis process, though it demands significantly more time investment than sequential approaches
Reaching the completion milestone of all six student interviews today felt incredibly satisfying, especially knowing that each conversation provided rich, detailed insights into how UPOU students navigate repetitive learning cycles and maintain motivation throughout their academic journey. With the student data collection phase now complete, I shifted focus to preparing for my distance education expert interview by revising my standard questionnaire to incorporate themes and patterns that emerged from the student conversations (See Attachment E.2.1), making the expert interview more targeted and relevant to the actual student experience rather than just theoretical assumptions. Currently, I'm deep in the simultaneous process of transcription and qualitative coding, which is proving to be more time-intensive than I initially anticipated - I'm about 50% through the student interviews, but the meticulous attention to detail required for proper coding means each hour of interview audio translates to several hours of analysis work, as I'm capturing not just what participants said but the nuances of how they expressed their experiences with routine fatigue and motivation strategies.
This dual approach of coding while transcribing is actually proving valuable because themes are emerging organically as I work through each interview, allowing me to refine my coding framework in real-time and ensuring I don't lose important insights that might be forgotten if I waited to code after completing all transcriptions. Moving forward, I'll need to balance the desire for thorough analysis with practical time constraints, and I'm considering whether to complete all transcriptions first or continue this integrated approach that's yielding richer insights but requiring more time per interview. The revised expert questionnaire should provide an excellent opportunity to validate and deepen the student-generated themes, and I'm particularly interested to see whether the distance education expert's observations align with the patterns I'm identifying in the student data.
